Theresa May: Women Can Be In Significant Positions

Women can be in significant positions, Theresa May has said.

Speaking in Saudi Arabia, where she visited yesterday, the prime minister refused to abide by the countries known Islamic code of dressing. Her trip was meant to boost trade and security ties with the kingdom.

Theresa May said: “I hope women see me as a wan leader and will see what women can achieve, and how women can be in significant positions”.

Her comments are an inspiration to thousands of women in Muslim countries where women are subjugated by dominating men and a dominant me culture.

May represents the highest level of success for a woman rarely seen in Muslim countries. Religion or culture should never impinge on a woman’s right to explore their skills and their potential.

Theresa May met with another accomplished woman – Sarah al- Suhaimi , head of the Saudi stock exchange in Riyadh, and was also due to meet Princess Reema, the vice president for women’s affairs in the country’s sports governing body.
In reference to the importance to maintain good relations, May said ” Rather than just standing on the sidelines and sniping, it is important to engage , to talk to people, to talk to people , to talk about our interests and to raise difficult issues when we feel is necessary”.

Calls for Britain to end the sale of arms to the Saudi government over allegations of war crime in the Yemen civil war have not received a final response, but the British prime minister highlighted that human right abuses are most effective where there is a good relationship with those countries.
