Theresa May Set For Showdown With Queen Over Plans To Scrap Royal Charters

By Ben Kerrigan-

Theresa May is set for a showdown with the Queen over plans to scrap seven of Her Majesty’s royal charters, The Mirror reports.

The U.k prime minister is scheduled to eradicate them from the UK’s research councils which invests £3billion a year to help University science teams make ground-breaking discoveries.
The royal charters inherently afford scientists independence of the Government and are free to carry out whatever research they choose. Thersa May’s plan to scrap them will lead to a showdown between May and the Queen if the Queen is strongly opposed to it.
The concern that this freedom is about to be compromised by political interference is believed will cause the first row between Theresa May and The Queen since she became Prime Minister. It is believed that the Queen will bring it up with Theresa May at one of their weekly audiences before it goes into law

Overhaul

The drastic overhaul will be overseen by Universities minister Jo Johnson, the brother of Foreign Secretary Boris.Jo plans a major shake-up of higher education in a Bill now going through Parliament.
Under Johnson’s plans, the seven bodies that include the Medical Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council  is to be merged into an amalgamated into UK Research and Innovation.
The Royal Charter governs 50 Universities, which critics believe will be overridden by the new office for students.
Critics also say that the 50 universities governed by royal charters will have them overridden by the new Office for Students.
The first royal charter was given to Cambridge University in 1231 by Henry III granting it the right to run its own affairs.
