The Significance Of Queen’s First Brexit Speech In Netherlands

By Lucy Caulkett-

The Queen’s first speech about Brexit in the Netherland reveals an optimistic outlook on the future.Queen Elizabeth II showed no pessimism about the future, as she addressed the King of Netherlands. She said: “as we look toward a new partnership with Europe” the values shared by the UK and Holland “are our greatest assets”. Speaking at a state banquet in honour of King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima, the Queen added that as “innovators, traders and internationalists we look with confidence to the future.

The Queen, who is officially impartial in political matters,  emphasized the qualities needed by the UK and one of its closet European neighbours going forward, given the political divisions challenging Brexit talks. The Queen told Holland’s head of state during her speech: “I recall the state visit of your grandmother Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in 1972, when I spoke of how our nations’ close understanding and relationship would become increasingly important as a new configuration of Europe was emerging.

“As we look toward a new partnership with Europe, it is our shared values and commitment to each other, that are out greatest asset, and demonstrate that even through change, our enduring alliance remains strong, and as innovators, traders and internationalists we look with confidence to the future.”

Those shared values appear to be eroding as far as talks are concerned, but the issue of mutual commitment mentioned by The Queen is one that will only be established if and once a deal is agreed. Shared values and mutual commitment is always an asset in any meaningful and rewarding relationship.  Earlier, King Willem-Alexander said it “saddens us” to see the UK leave the EU but “Brexit does not mean farewell”.

The king repeated the comments in a speech at the banquet but emphasized his respect for the decision of the 2016 referendum. He proceeded to praise the Queen, describing her as “most fearless Bond Girl ever” as he referred to the film shown at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in which the monarch featured alongside 007 actor Daniel Craig. PARTNERSHIP

The Queen’s reference to a new partnership confirms the old partnership as one being left behind for a brighter future. Many analysts have grown very wary of the kind of Brexit the Uk will be embracing, but only the future has the precise answers.

Advocates Of Brexit believe the Uk can thrive through its trade with other nations of the world like America, Canada, China and others, but how leaving the EU will affect final outcomes is mere speculation st this stage.

There was no mention of regret in Britain leaving  the EU in the Queen’s speech, or explanation as to why Britain had decided to leave the EU because of the narrow vote in favour of leaving during the 2016 referendum.
