A 22-year-old woman has been killed and five other people injured after gunfire erupted at a rave in Switzerland, triggering a major police manhunt and a security operation across the area.
The shooting happened in the early hours of Sunday in Schachen, in Aarau, the capital of the northern Swiss canton of Aargau, where hundreds of people had gathered for a late-night event. Police said they were alerted to “night-time shots” and immediately launched a large-scale operation as officers raced to the scene.
The incident left one young woman dead at the scene and five others injured, with some of the wounded described as being in serious condition. All six victims are Swiss nationals, according to police.
The attack is believed to have taken place during the “Aarau Rave VOL. 7”, which was being held at a local horse racing track. The event had drawn revellers to the site before violence suddenly broke out in the early hours, turning what had been a night of entertainment into a scene of panic and devastation.
Police have urged members of the public to stay away from the area while officers continue their investigation and search for those responsible. A substantial section around the incident has been sealed off, including the horse racing track, a swimming pool and a nearby sports field.
The scale of the police response underlines the seriousness of the incident as investigators work to establish exactly what happened, identify the suspected gunman or gunmen and determine what may have led to the shooting.
A witness told Swiss newspaper Blick that the shots were fired at around 2.30am local time, or 1.30am in the UK. In the chaos that followed, the witness said he attempted to resuscitate a woman who had suffered a gunshot wound.
Despite efforts to save her, the 22-year-old woman died at the scene.
Four men and another woman, aged between 24 and 27, were taken to hospital following the shooting. Their injuries range from minor to severe, according to police, leaving investigators facing the additional challenge of determining the circumstances in which each victim was wounded.
The sudden eruption of violence has shocked the local community and raised questions about how a heavily attended nighttime event could become the setting for a deadly shooting. Police have not yet publicly established a motive, nor have they confirmed whether the attack was targeted or whether those attending the rave were randomly caught up in the violence.
The priority for investigators is now the search for those responsible. With the area around the event venue cordoned off, police are expected to examine the scene for evidence and gather accounts from witnesses who may have seen the shooting or observed suspicious activity before or after the gunfire.
Witnesses at the event could prove crucial to the investigation, particularly given the large number of people who may have been present when the shots rang out. Investigators will need to reconstruct the final moments before the shooting, establish where the gunfire originated and determine how the attacker or attackers escaped.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of gun violence, with one young life lost and five others left injured during what should have been an ordinary night of music and entertainment.
For those who witnessed the incident, the memories are likely to remain deeply disturbing. The account of a bystander attempting to save a critically wounded woman illustrates the confusion and desperation that followed the gunfire, as revellers and witnesses were suddenly confronted with a life-threatening emergency.
Police have not released further details about the identity of the deceased woman or the identities of the injured victims. They have also not indicated whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Authorities are continuing to appeal for information as the manhunt gets under way. Anyone with relevant information or who witnessed suspicious behaviour around the rave or surrounding area is expected to be of particular interest to investigators.
The shooting has cast a dark shadow over Aarau, with the community now waiting for answers about why the violence occurred and whether those responsible remain at large.
As police continue to secure the scene and piece together the events of the early hours, the focus remains firmly on finding whoever opened fire and bringing them to justice.
What began as a night of music and celebration ended in tragedy: a 22-year-old woman dead, five people in hospital and a community facing the disturbing reality of a deadly shooting at the heart of a public event.
For the families of those affected, the investigation will offer little immediate comfort. Their loved one is dead, others are recovering from potentially serious injuries, and the person responsible remains the subject of an urgent police search.
The investigation is continuing.
