Storm Evert: Met Office Warning Of Further Strong Winds And Heavy Rain

The Met Office has issued a warning today, July 29, announcing that Storm Evert will bring ‘unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of the UK later today and into Friday’.

Winds are expected to be as strong as 75mph, with the Met Office warning areas near the coast like Cornwall and Isles of Scilly to ‘be prepared’.

The warning comes after days of wet weather and thunderstorms disrupted what has so far been good hot summer weather.

Relentless rain has already lashed the country in recent days, following on from a soaring heatwave with temperatures above 30C.

Forecasters  issued severe weather warnings for rain in north west England and wind in south west England on Thursday and Friday, with gusts of up to 65mph predicted.

The Met Office today officially named Storm Evert as heavy rain and 75mph gales hit UK. The warning says that in the south there could be ‘damage to infrastructure’ as well as travel disruption.

An amber warning for wind is already place for the south west of England, as from 9pm on Thursday until Friday at 7am.

Storm Evert will approach south-western parts of the UK and Ireland through today, Sky News reports, with rain hitting parts of southern Ireland, south-west of Wales and England this afternoon while winds strengthen.

It will then move eastwards into tonight and as it engulfs more of the south and west of the UK, winds will strengthen further.

Severe gales are also predicted for parts of the Cornish coastline, as well as the Isles of Scilly where the Met Office have issued an amber ‘be prepared’ wind warning. There will also be strong to gale force winds likely across many southern and south-western coasts of England and Wales.

She added that it will remain ‘very windy for many southern and western parts of the UK’ tomorrow, July 30, alongside spells of rain and thunderstorms being ‘likely for parts of the Midlands, East Anglia and northern England’.
