Spain has intensified its campaign to stage the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with the country’s sports minister insisting the nation has earned the right to host football’s biggest match because of its rich sporting heritage, world-class infrastructure and continued success on the international stage. Speaking amid growing speculation over where the tournament’s showpiece final will be played, Spain’s Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sport, Milagros Tolón,(PICTURED) said she remains confident FIFA will ultimately choose Spain over fellow co-host Morocco to stage the tournament decider.
The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while the opening commemorative matches will take place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to mark the centenary of the inaugural FIFA World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930. Although FIFA has officially confirmed the six host nations, it has yet to announce which country will stage the final, with Spain and Morocco emerging as the leading contenders. The debate intensified this week after reports claimed FIFA president Gianni Infantino had privately offered Morocco the opportunity to host the final in an effort to strengthen political support ahead of the next FIFA presidential election.

However, FIFA swiftly dismissed the reports, insisting no such agreement had been made. Tolón welcomed the clarification, saying Spain’s bid remains firmly on course.
“The most important thing is that FIFA has already denied it,” she told Cadena SER radio.
“We are working with FIFA and our next meeting is in September. We’re going to keep working because we want and we believe the World Cup final has to be held in Spain. We deserve it and we’ve always been committed to it taking place in Spain.”

The minister outlined several reasons why she believes Spain is the natural choice to host football’s biggest fixture.
“Firstly, we are world champions in both the men’s and women’s World Cups,” she said.
“Secondly, Spain and Portugal jointly put forward the bid for the 2030 World Cup, with Morocco later joining them.
“We have a wealth of experience in sporting events, but, what’s more, Spain has a modern communications network and a high level of security. Given all these advantages, I am convinced that FIFA will choose Spain to host the final.” Spain’s confidence is underpinned by one of the most impressive football pedigrees in the modern game. The country has enjoyed sustained success over the past two decades, becoming one of world football’s dominant powers thanks to an era defined by technical excellence, possession-based football and a generation of exceptional players. Spain’s greatest moment came in 2010 when Vicente del Bosque guided La Roja to their first FIFA World Cup title in South Africa.
After years of near misses at major tournaments, Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0 in a dramatic final in Johannesburg, with Andrés Iniesta scoring the winning goal in extra time to secure the country’s first world crown. That triumph completed one of the greatest periods in international football history. Spain had already won UEFA Euro 2008 before lifting the World Cup in 2010 and followed it by retaining the European Championship in 2012, becoming the first men’s national team to win three consecutive major international tournaments.
The side revolutionised modern football with its celebrated “tiki-taka” style, built around intricate passing, intelligent movement and extraordinary technical ability. The team featured some of the greatest footballers of their generation, including goalkeeper Iker Casillas, widely regarded as one of the finest shot-stoppers in football history; midfield maestros Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta, whose creativity and control transformed the way the game was played; defender Carles Puyol, whose leadership became legendary; and striker David Villa, Spain’s all-time leading men’s goal scorer for many years.
Other stars such as Sergio Ramos, Gerard Piqué, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Fernando Torres, Cesc Fàbregas and David Silva helped establish Spain as the benchmark for international football during that remarkable era. The country’s football success has continued into a new generation. Spain’s women’s national team claimed its first FIFA Women’s World Cup title in 2023 after defeating England 1-0 in the final in Sydney, a victory that confirmed the country’s growing dominance across both the men’s and women’s game. The men’s team has also remained among Europe’s elite, winning UEFA Euro 2024 with an exciting young squad featuring emerging stars such as Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams alongside experienced internationals. Spanish football continues to produce some of the world’s finest players through renowned academies such as FC Barcelona’s La Masia and Real Madrid’s youth development system, ensuring the country remains one of football’s global powerhouses.
Hosting the 2030 World Cup final would therefore carry enormous symbolic significance for Spain, which previously staged the FIFA World Cup in 1982. That tournament was won by Italy, but Spain earned widespread praise for successfully organising one of football’s biggest global events and has since hosted numerous UEFA Champions League finals, European Championship matches and other major international sporting competitions. If Spain is selected to stage the final, attention is expected to focus on two of the country’s most iconic stadiums. Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has recently undergone a multi-billion-euro redevelopment, transforming it into one of the world’s most technologically advanced sporting venues with a retractable roof, retractable pitch and a seating capacity exceeding 80,000.

Barcelona’s Camp Nou, currently being redeveloped as part of the ambitious Espai Barça project, is also expected to be among the largest football stadiums in Europe once renovations are completed.
Morocco, however, presents formidable competition. The North African nation plans to build the spectacular King Hassan II Stadium near Casablanca, a proposed 115,000-seat arena that would become one of the largest football stadiums ever constructed. Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup also elevated the country’s global football profile and strengthened its case to host the tournament’s biggest match. Despite that competition, Spanish officials remain optimistic that their country’s football heritage, infrastructure and organisational experience will prove decisive.
Spain already boasts one of Europe’s most advanced transport networks, including extensive high-speed rail links connecting major host cities, modern international airports and world-class sporting facilities capable of accommodating millions of supporters. The country also has decades of experience staging elite sporting events, from football tournaments and Olympic competitions to international tennis, cycling and basketball championships.
Many Spanish supporters consider awarding Spain the World Cup final would also recognise the country’s enduring contribution to the global game.
Few nations have influenced modern football as profoundly as Spain, whose clubs and national teams have consistently set standards for technical excellence, tactical innovation and player development.
While FIFA has yet to make a final decision, Spain’s government is making clear that it believes the country’s football achievements, proven hosting credentials and passionate sporting culture make it the ideal stage for the most watched sporting event on the planet. The final decision is expected after further discussions between FIFA and the tournament’s host nations in the coming months, with Spain determined to ensure that football’s greatest prize is contested on Spanish soil for the first time since the country last hosted the World Cup more than four decades ago.
