MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS IN SOCIETY

BY JAMES SIMONS

Mental health is a societal problem today. Statistics from the department of health disturbingly puts the mental health distribution at 1 in 4.

Mental health has different types and causes. some are genetic, neurotic psychological, environmental.

Psychological issues could arise from a terrible experience from an individual’s childhood, a devastating experience in  a person’s adolescent years or a person’s adult life

mental health problems could be caused by the loss of a close friend or family, sexual abuse in your childhood, or psychiatric illness caused by witnessing a terrible tragedy.

Any of the consequences of the aforementioned related causes, can induce a regular and ongoing disorientation of the mind, leading to mental health problems.

A continuously stressed and deteriorated mind, can gradually become comfortable in irrational behaviour.  The sufferer might not even be aware they have mental health problems. Unless they have been diagnosed with it.

Add to that the possible inclusion of drugs in the life of someone already suffering the milder symptoms of mental health problems. A potential disaster is already brewing with the complex cocktail of the different factors.

Mental health illness also runs in the genes of many of it’s sufferers. Abusers of drugs for example, who also have a cocktail of other complex issues like repeated sexual abuse, huge disappointment in their life, are in trouble. Unless they address it properly and urgently.

Such individuals often drink heavily too, and soon become a victim of their irrational and self inflicted poisonous impulses. Dangerous actions may accompany their hot and misguided temper.

Thomas Mair must have had a bad mix of mental health issues. No ordinary fool in their right mind would shoot and kill an MP in broad day light like that.

All because she was campaigning to remain in the EU. Eye witnesses said he shot her twice, kicked her when she fell to the ground, and stabbed her! He also shot her in the face one more time.

The maniac was trying to reload his gun when he was tackled by a brave 77 year old. This is the same man described by neighbors to the BBC as polite. This means on the exterior, he seemed perfectly normal. This highlights  society’s mental health problem. Imagine how many more like him are out there.

Mair’s brother said he helped his mother with her shopping twice a week. He therefore appears to be a normal man, but his mind was quietly sick. Most types of mental illness can be treated, if recognized and attended to early.
