A man and a woman arrested following the death of a child at a property in Shoebury have been released on bail, Essex Police has confirmed.
The development comes after Eye of Media reported yesterday that the child who died was six-year-old Sophia.
The man, aged 24, from Rayleigh, and the woman, aged 26, from Shoebury, were arrested as part of the early stages of the police investigation. Both have now been released on bail while enquiries continue. Police were called by ambulance service colleagues to a property in Eagle Way, Shoebury, shortly before 8am on Monday, following concerns about a child’s welfare.
Officers attended the scene and found the child had suffered injuries. The child was pronounced dead at the property.
An Essex Police spokesperson confirmed the latest development, saying: “As part of our early investigative work a 24-year-old man from Rayleigh and a 26-year-old woman from Shoebury were both arrested and have both been released on bail while enquiries continue.”
The cause of the child’s death has not yet been established. A post-mortem examination is expected to help determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Forensic officers remained at the scene on Tuesday as police continued their investigation. Residents had reported a significant emergency services presence in the area on Monday morning, including police vehicles and ambulances. Despite the arrests, police have stressed that there is no wider risk to the public.
No charges have been brought against either of the two individuals at this stage, and the investigation remains ongoing. The death has prompted concern in the Shoebury community as investigators work to establish exactly what happened at the Eagle Way property.
