Two serving police officers accused of rape have appeared in court, reigniting concerns over sexual violence allegations involving those sworn to protect the public and raising renewed questions about standards and accountability within Britain’s police forces.
Former Essex Police officer Harry Croot and suspended Metropolitan Police officer Charlie Raeside, both 29, appeared before Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court charged in connection with the alleged rape of a woman following an incident reported to have taken place in Grays, Essex, in 2022.

The case, investigated by Essex Police detectives, centres on allegations made by a woman who has been receiving support from specialist officers since reporting the incident. Both men were arrested in September 2024 after the investigation gathered sufficient evidence to bring charges.
Croot faces a single charge of rape. Raeside is charged with rape, intentional suffocation and failing to disclose the PIN code to a mobile phone when lawfully required to do so.
Both have been released on conditional bail until a further hearing at Basildon Crown Court on Friday, September 4. Conditional bail is rarely granted for ordinary people charged with rape; making it not sit well when courts take the exceptional step of granting bail for police officers charged with rape.

The allegations have once again placed the spotlight on police vetting and misconduct procedures, with the case adding to a growing list of serious sexual offence investigations involving serving and former officers across England and Wales in recent years. Public confidence in policing has been repeatedly shaken by cases in which officers have been accused—or convicted—of exploiting the authority entrusted to them.
Following his arrest, Croot was suspended from Essex Police before being dismissed in January 2025 over unrelated misconduct matters. Raeside was suspended by the Metropolitan Police after his arrest and remains suspended while the criminal proceedings continue.
The latest prosecution also revives questions about the scale of sexual misconduct allegations within Essex Police itself. Freedom of Information figures released by the force show that between 2017 and 2021 ,it recorded numerous allegations of sexual misconduct against police officers, including allegations of sexual assault, abuse of position for a sexual purpose and one allegation of rape during the 2019–20 financial year.
Many of those cases were referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for independent assessment or investigation, reflecting the seriousness with which such complaints are treated.
Although the overwhelming majority of police officers serve honourably, every allegation of sexual violence against an officer carries consequences far beyond the individual case. Victims’ groups have repeatedly warned that reports involving police officers can deter survivors from coming forward, fearing they may not be believed or fairly treated by those responsible for investigating sexual offences.
The prosecution of Croot and Raeside comes amid continuing efforts by police forces across England and Wales to strengthen vetting procedures, root out officers who abuse their position and rebuild public trust after a succession of high-profile scandals involving sexual misconduct.
The case will now proceed through the courts. As with all criminal proceedings, both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proved guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
