The force previously said it was reviewing claims Andrew allegedly shared sensitive information with his paedo pal Jeffrey Epstein while serving as the UK’s trade envoy.

Cops also confirmed at the time that the force was separately probing allegations a woman was trafficked to the UK by Epstein to have a sexual encounter with Andrew.

The arrest came after new emails were released by the US, publishing those in connection with Epstein. In those files, Mountbatten-Windsor had in 2010 forwarded to Epstein reports about Vietnam, Singapore and other places he had visited on official trips.

In relation to the arrest,  king Charles has released a statement regarding his brother’s arrest.

“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” the monarch said.

“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation,” he added.

“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter,” Charles continued.

“Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.” The British antimonarchist group, Republic, has welcomed the news of the former prince’s arrest, saying it had reported Andrew to the police “when others were unwilling to act”.

“Republic has been instigating a private prosecution when the police were reluctant to investigate,” the group’s CEO, Graham Smith, said in a statement.

“Republic’s lawyers will continue to investigate related alleged offences and provide information to the police over the coming weeks and months. There is reason to believe that in relation to some offences other senior royals may be material witnesses and may have also committed offences,” he added.

Smith called on the police to “follow all evidence” and called for King Charles and Prince William to speak up and “admit to whatever they have known, when and why they continued to protect Andrew”
