A pensioner has been jailed for 16 years after being caught for historical sexual charges involving a boy.Kenneth Sunderland, 71, of Grindon Crescent was found guilty of six indecent assaults and two serious attempted sexual offences on the child after a trial.
The 71-year-old began abusing the boy when he was two-years-old. The offences were first reported to Nottingham Police in 2016, but shortly before the offence reported, the victim sought an apology from Sutherland, when he heard the pensioner had cancer. Sunderland told him, “it was not rape whatever it was”.
He will be on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and has been given a restraining order to keep away from the victim. Nottingham Crown Court. In the late 1990s, Sunderland, was being investigated for sexually abusing the females – allegations he went on to plead guilty to previously in a separate case. The arrest and jail sentence is a reminder that those who offend in their early years can always be caught and punished for it many years later. Awareness of this fact is very important for people, but many offenders do not consider the probability of being caught many years later for an offence until it happens.
Detective Constable Alicia Harrison said: “I’m so pleased that the survivor has been given justice after having lived with this throughout his whole childhood and a large part of his adult life.
“Sunderland is a vile man who has a history of sexually abusing young people and I am glad that he will now spend his later years behind bars.
“When any form of abuse is reported to us, we will do everything in our powers to secure a conviction, regardless of when it happened, how old you were at the time or how old the suspect is now. Please report it to us, we are here, we will listen and we will believe you.”
