A fire in North Kensington that engulfed a 24 storey building , killing at least 6 people could have been avoided.
The fire that consumed the High rise Greenfield Tower block of apartment in the North Kensington area started around 1pm. Some witnesses spoke to members of their family on their mobile phones, as they desperately tried to escape.
Over 40 fire engines and 200 fire fighters attempted.to stem the horrifying blaze that has claimed lives , with the death toll expected to rise.
SCREAMS
Witnesses said they heard screams from trapped and scared residences in the building as the monstrous fire consumed every floor from the second floor upwards .
Residents and members of the Grwenfell Action had raised several concerns about the safety of he building , but were ignored.
IGNORANCE
This kind of ignorance displayed by individuals in authority is common across many organisations. When ignorance and inaction leads to the tragic loss of life, the bar of responsibility becomes higher. Some rwsidents who escaped have lost their loved ones who were on the higher floors.
JUMP
Desperate residents are reported to have jumped out of windows , many wrapping towels and bedshitsas they lept off in a last bid to survive. Distressing scenes of people throwing their children out of windows were also told . Some survived and sustained serious injuries.
The Tower block was built in 1974, and a £10m renovation was undertaken last year. All appear to have been in vain and at the expense of many lives.
Several complaints about the safety of the building will haunt the landlords of the building who must explain themselves.
Emotional support has been pouring from concerned neighbours and organisations . Over 10 hours later , the fire is still burning, despite the efforts of the fire brigade .
INVESTIGATION
A thorough investigation is expected, but people will want immediate answers about this tragedy. Those who have lost loved ones will be in desperate shock over this senseless loss of lives. The cause and spread of the fire is unknown , but those who once complained put it down to the unsafe framework of the building.
