The Metro has apologised to JK Rowling after wrongly stating that the Harry Potter author had “engaged in Holocaust denial”, correcting an allegation that had appeared in coverage of actor Nicholas Hoult’s departure from the forthcoming HBO adaptation of the books.
The newspaper, which is distributed free across the UK, removed the claim from an article discussing Hoult’s replacement in the Harry Potter television series and issued a correction acknowledging that it had wrongly characterised Rowling as a Holocaust denier. The apology comes after the allegation had been presented alongside references to the author’s controversial views on transgender rights, potentially giving readers the impression that the claim was an established fact.

The original article was focused on Hoult, who had been cast as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, the vain Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Following a backlash from some Harry Potter fans over Rowling’s views on sex and gender, Hoult was replaced by former Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington. HBO attributed the change to scheduling conflicts.
In its report on the casting change, however, the Metro described Rowling as having “misgendered people”, including Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, “engaged in Holocaust denial” and previously claimed that education about transgender young people was “more harmful than lobotomies”.
The reference to Holocaust denial was subsequently removed. In its correction, the Metro said it had “wrongly stated that JK Rowling had been ‘engaged in Holocaust denial’”. The newspaper explained that the wording followed claims made against Rowling on X in March 2024, when she was accused of denying aspects of the Holocaust. The Metro said Rowling had “strenuously denied” that allegation, adding that the accusation had been removed and apologising for the error.

The distinction is important because Holocaust denial has a specific meaning. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance defines Holocaust denial as discourse or propaganda that denies the historical reality and extent of the extermination of Jews by Nazi Germany and its accomplices during the Second World War. Its working definition also covers attempts to deny or cast doubt on central mechanisms of the Holocaust or the intention behind the genocide. The IHRA describes its definition as a non-legally binding working tool.
The controversy surrounding Rowling arose from a separate argument over how Nazi persecution should be understood in the context of transgender history. In March 2024, Rowling responded on social media to a post claiming that the Nazis had burned books about transgender healthcare and research and questioning why she was allegedly seeking to uphold what the post described as Nazi ideology on gender.
Rowling rejected the claim, responding that the person making it should have checked the source before posting it. Her argument was connected to a wider dispute over claims concerning the treatment of transgender people under Nazi rule and the significance of the destruction of the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin.
The historical background is real but complex. In 1933, Nazi authorities and their supporters looted the Institute for Sexual Science, founded by German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, and burned books and other materials from its library and archives. The institute had conducted research and provided services relating to sexuality and gender, including work involving transgender people.
The existence of that persecution, however, is separate from the question of whether Rowling denied the Holocaust. Rowling has repeatedly rejected the allegation that she is a Holocaust denier and has argued that challenging claims about Nazi persecution of transgender people should not be equated with denying the Holocaust itself.
Following the 2024 accusations, Rowling said the allegation was “baseless and disgusting”. She also said she had consistently supported the Jewish community and spoken against antisemitism. Her argument was that claims describing transgender people as having been uniquely persecuted or as having been the Nazis’ “first targets” should be examined historically rather than treated as established fact.
The IHRA’s definition helps explain why the Metro’s correction matters. Holocaust denial concerns the denial of the Nazi genocide of European Jews, rather than disagreement over every historical claim concerning Nazi persecution or the treatment of other groups. The organisation also distinguishes denial from Holocaust distortion, which can include deliberate attempts to minimise the Holocaust, distort its principal elements or blur responsibility for the genocide. aaginst the backdrop of Rowling’s increasingly prominent involvement in Britain’s debate over transgender rights.
The author has become one of the most outspoken critics of policies and campaigning positions that she believes undermine sex-based rights and protections for women. She has previously said that there are “no trans kids” and has campaigned against the inclusion of transgender women in some single-sex spaces.
Her position has made her a deeply divisive figure. Supporters argue that she is defending women’s sex-based rights and freedom of speech, while critics accuse her of promoting views that marginalise transgender people. The dispute has extended into the entertainment industry and has affected relationships between Rowling and some people associated with the Harry Potter franchise.
Several actors involved in the new HBO adaptation have publicly distanced themselves from Rowling’s views. Paapa Essiedu, who is set to play Professor Snape, has expressed support for transgender people, while Bel Powley, who will play Aunt Petunia, has also been associated with criticism of Rowling’s position. John Lithgow, who has been cast as Albus Dumbledore, has likewise been drawn into questions about the relationship between the actors and the author.
The dispute surrounding Hoult’s casting demonstrates how Rowling’s political and cultural views continue to influence discussion of the Harry Potter franchise more than a decade after the publication of the final main novel. For fans, actors and the companies involved in the new television adaptation, the challenge is increasingly how to separate a globally successful fictional universe from the views of the person who created it.
For the Metro, however, the immediate issue is one of journalistic accuracy. The newspaper’s correction acknowledges that an exceptionally serious accusation was presented inaccurately. Holocaust denial is a term carrying a specific historical and moral meaning, and the IHRA stresses the importance of challenging denial and distortion while maintaining an accurate understanding of the historical record.
The episode is therefore more than another chapter in the long-running row over Rowling’s views on transgender rights. It is also a reminder of the consequences of attaching a highly serious allegation to a public figure without accurately establishing what the person has said or done. In this case, the Metro has now accepted that its description of Rowling as having “engaged in Holocaust denial” was wrong and has publicly apologised.
The correction does not settle the wider argument over Rowling’s views, nor does it require readers to agree with her positions on sex and gender. It does, however, draw a clear line between legitimate disagreement over contested political and historical questions and an allegation that the newspaper itself has acknowledged was inaccurately made.
