A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the shooting of a 16-year-old boy who remains critically ill in hospital. The dramatic development comes after a major investigation by police spanning two cities.
The shooting took place on Monday, 24 November 2025, at approximately 17:15 GMT, on London Road in Sheffield. According to the police, the teenager was found injured on the busy thoroughfare, rushed to hospital, and remains in a life-threatening condition.
On Saturday night (29 November), officers from Police Scotland carried out an arrest in Aberdeen: a 26-year-old man was detained on suspicion of attempted murder. A 23-year-old woman was also arrested at the same location, believed to be assisting an offender; both remain in police custody.
This arrest marks a significant turning point in what has been a swiftly evolving investigation. Earlier in the week, two boys aged 15 and 16 had already been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, but they have since been released on bail pending further inquiries. A 40-year-old man initially arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has also been released on bail.
A shock to the community
The incident coming on a Monday evening and on a busy city street has sent shockwaves through the local community. Residents described scenes of panic and disbelief as emergency services, including ambulance crews, attended the site. Since then, police cordons and forensic teams have been at the scene, while local people have been urged to come forward with any information.
Community leaders and law-enforcement officials have spoken out sharply. South Yorkshire Police condemned the violence, calling gun crime “unacceptable” and stressing that young lives should not be cut short in this manner. Superintendent Martin Simcock described the shooting as “appalling,” adding that the force would not tolerate such violence in their region.
Meanwhile, senior investigating officer Emma Knight appealed for public support: she thanked those who had already contacted police, and urged anyone with potentially relevant information — no matter how small — to come forward. She emphasised that community cooperation could be vital to securing justice for the injured teenager and dismantling dangerous armed networks.
Police have also increased patrols in the London Road area to reassure residents and to prevent further incidents. For now, the streets remain wary, with many waiting anxiously for updates on the boy’s condition and on the broader investigation.
Investigation continues amid fresh leads
With the arrest in Aberdeen — hundreds of miles away from Sheffield — questions remain about the connections between those detained and the shooting in Sheffield. Investigators are working to establish whether the 26-year-old man and the 23-year-old woman have direct links to the attack, or whether either played a supporting role.
No formal charges have yet been laid, and enquiries remain ongoing “at pace,” according to police statements.
The release on bail of the two teenagers originally apprehended indicates that investigators are still piecing together a clearer picture of motive, sequence, and accountability. Forensic teams continue to examine the scene on London Road and officers are reviewing CCTV footage, witness statements, and other evidence.
The community’s response has been one of shock, concern, and anger — particularly among families with children. Local residents expressed disbelief that such violence could erupt in a busy city street, during what should be an ordinary evening commute. Calls for greater safeguarding and renewed efforts to tackle gun crime at a deeper, systemic level are already being heard.
Legal and social-work experts note that violent crime involving youths and firearms remains deeply troubling, not only for immediate victims but for broader social cohesion.
The harm caused by this tragedy goes much beyond the evening of November 24 for the injured adolescent and his family. His future is still unknown as he battles for his life in the hospital; his family and friends are still waiting for him to heal, receive justice, and find closure.
Meanwhile, police continue working to unravel the full circumstances of the attack. Investigators stress that no one involved should consider themselves beyond the reach of justice — and that it remains vital for anyone with information to step forward.
The violent shooting of a 16-year-old boy on a Sheffield street and the subsequent arrest of a suspect in Aberdeen underscore the pervasive threat and ripple effects of gun crime. As the investigation progresses and communities react, the broader challenge remains: preventing further tragedy, rebuilding trust, and protecting young lives from recurring violence.
