Lennox Lewis: Lack Of Experience Will Cost Anthony Joshua Against Klitschko

By Tim Parsons-

Lennox Lewis’s view that Anthony Joshua’s lack of experience would count against Wladimir Klitschko is partially true.

The former undisputed world champion told Sky sports that Anthony Joshua has knocked out everybody, and therefore hasn’t learnt anything. Lewis said:

“We have seen a lot of Anthony Joshua’s fights but he has knocked out everybody so what has he learned? Where is the experience there?
“You know Wladimir is almost up to 70 fights so you have got the experience and the old and you have got the new and the strong. So which one are you going to take?
“I will take experience but only slightly. When you get experience, you have to look at Wladimir’s body. Can Wladimir’s body take more going into the ring and more fights?”I don’t know where he is on that level. We are going to have to see.”

PARTIALLY TRUE

lennox Lewis’s statement is partially true. Klitschko’s wide experience gives him greater advantage when it comes to the ability to adapt to adverse circumstances in the ring, and also technical ability. The former world champion may also have better resistance than Joshua, despite his advancing years in the sport. Wladimir Klitschko will handle tension and nerves better than Joshua, for the simple reason that he has been in far more tense situations in the ring than Anthony Joshua.
The one weakness in Lewis’s analyses is the fact that Joshua can really bang, and Klitschko may not have been hit by many heavyweights with Joshua’s power, and who throws punches in clusters the way Joshua is capable of doing. However, Dominic Breazeale took Joshua’s punches for 7 rounds, and so did Dillian Whyte. So, Joshua’s power is not ine that cannot be withstood by solid and durable heavyweights.
Klitschko may have lost some of his air of invincibility by losing to Fury, but the fact Fury had a banned substance in his system means Fury had an unfair advantage when he beat Wladimir Klitschko. This means Klitschko may not have lost that fight if he was not fighting a man with an illegal substance in his system. Klitschko’s strong determination to correct the loss, and his long sustained training to match up to and surpass the top level of performance Fury brought into their fight with the extra advantage of a banned substance in his system, makes him an even more dangerous than he was when he fought Tyson Fury.

EDDIE HEARN

Eddie Hearn

The move by Eddie Hearns to match Joshua with Wladimir Klitschko when Tyson Fury pulled out, shows the level of Eddie Hearn confidence in Joshua. However, the prospect of a massive pay day would also have plated an influential role in his decision, which is where it could have gone wrong for Joshua.

This was a big fight for Joshua that would have made him a two belt holder if he won,but Wladimir Klitschko’s superior experience and top physical condition would have at least given him a 50-50 chance of victory against Joshua. The true ratio may even be more than 50-50. Commentators will always give the new guy moving up the rankings the edge, especially when they have not been beaten.

HIGHER EXPERIENCE

However, even at 40, Klitschko, who has not lost legitimately for 11 years, could easily have wrecked Joshua’s show. However, Anthony Joshua may have knocked out Klitschko, considering he has knocked everyone else out, and seems to always win.

Klitschko’s higher experience would give the former heavyweight champion an advantage against Joshua, but Joshua could blow that experience away if Klitschko gets hit enough times and can’t provide enough resistance. It would be a very interesting fight with huge risks for Anthony Joshua.
In the meantime,Joshua’s team are taking too long to decide who their next opponent will be. Unbeaten Kubrat Pulev is his mandatory opponent, and Joshua’s team are not explaining why they don’t just agree to a fight with Pulev. Do they find him a big risk? Reports suggest they are seriously considering fighting Polish heavyweight Eric Molina, who gave WBC champion, Deontey Wilder a tough fight for  rounds, threatening an upset when he rocked the American world champion in the third round of their fight. He gave Wilder an even fight for the whole 9 rounds, and will threaten Joshua’s unbeaten record. However, they may still prefer him to Pulev, especially if they think it will pay more money.
The fight was called off after Wladimir Klitschko explained that he wanted to fight for his old belts, and not just the IBF belt Joshua has. Wladimir Klitschko is said to have later picked up an injury in training, but in reality, this is not the fight he wanted. He did not want the Joshua fight because it was risky with less rewards. Wladimir Klitschko has since expressed a desire to make the fight with Joshua in March, especially as he found himself without a fight after Joseph Parker left his mandatory spot to fight Joshua and went for a WBO title fight with Andy Ruiz.
