Julia Wandelt, 24, faced justice at Leicester Crown Court following a five-week trial detailing her relentless pursuit of Kate and Gerry McCann. Mrs. Justice Cutts cleared Wandelt of the more serious charge of stalking but found her guilty of harassment.

This verdict led the judge to impose a rigorous restraining order against the parents and their children, recognizing Wandelt posed a “significant risk of harassment” toward the McCanns in the future.

Wandelt was formally sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, a term the judge confirmed she had already served while in custody since her arrest in February. Addressing Wandelt directly, Judge Cutts explained the necessity of the restrictions, stating: “An order is necessary in this case for the sake of the McCanns.”

The judge clearly admonished the defendant, calling her constant “pestering” and “badgering” of the family both “unwarranted” and “unkind.”

The judge emphasized that Wandelt’s persistent denial of reality, stating, “Even when giving evidence you did not accept you were not Madeleine,” solidified the need for the protective measure.

This Madeleine McCann Harassment Conviction concludes the l⁵egal chapter related to Wandelt’s highly publicised claims, which drew an audience of half a million followers to her dedicated Instagram account, iammadeleinemccan, and generated viral content on TikTok over three years.

Madeleine McCann, who was nearly four years old when she vanished from her family’s rented holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007, remains the world’s most famous missing child.

Wandelt, who was born three years after Madeleine’s disappearance, began claiming she was the missing girl after internet research into missing children triggered suspicion she had been abducted and raised by a couple who were not her biological parents.

Her claims were reportedly influenced by existing mental health issues and memories of abuse suffered from an elderly relative.

Wandelt noted the relative bore a disturbing resemblance to an artist’s drawing of a man previously identified as a suspect in the Madeleine case, intensifying her initial belief.

Wandelt quickly propelled her story onto the international stage, telling a US TV chat show audience, “I believe I am Madeleine McCann.” She claimed to possess a blemish in the iris of her right eye, similar to Madeleine’s distinctive feature, and insisted she physically resembled aged-progressed images of the missing girl.

Despite police informing Wandelt she was not Madeleine and issuing a direct order not to approach the family, she willfully ignored the warning.

The court heard distressing evidence detailing how Wandelt repeatedly ignored the authorities, showing up at the McCanns’ home and sending them sinister letters and messages, consistently begging for a DNA test.

In one particularly intrusive period, Wandelt called and messaged Mrs. McCann more than 60 times in a single day, claiming to have a memory of the mother tenderly stroking her head.

During the trial, Wandelt denied her actions were motivated by a desire for fame or money, insisting she was not a liar and never intended to cause the McCanns or their younger twin children, Sean and Amelia, any harm. Ultimately, a DNA test conducted earlier this year definitively proved she was not Madeleine McCann, confirming the family’s assertions.

The court heard the McCanns and their children gave evidence during the trial, detailing the profound upset and distress Wandelt’s actions had inflicted upon them.

The formal imposition of the restraining order serves as the primary safeguard for the McCann family following the distressing Madeleine McCann Harassment Conviction. The order is comprehensive and imposes strict boundaries on Wandelt’s future conduct. It permanently bans her from contacting Mr. and Mrs. McCann, or their children, either directly or indirectly.

Crucially, the order also prohibits Wandelt from entering the entire county of Leicestershire, where the family resides. She is banned from publishing or broadcasting any information relating to the family until a subsequent court order potentially modifies the restrictions.

The co-accused in the case, Karen Spragg, 61, who was found not guilty of both stalking and harassment, was also made subject to the same strict restrictions, though her restraining order was imposed for a longer period of five years.

This final legal action aims to provide the McCann family with the long-sought peace and security they need after years of persistent intrusion and highly publicized claims.
