Seven people have died in the Carribbean’s storm of the century, Hurricane Melissa with three of those deaths coming from Jamaica, three in Haiti, and one in the Dominican Republic. The storm has also triggered a massive power cut affecting over 240,000 electric customers. Residents have been warned to take shelter and avoid being affected by the devastating storm.
Hurricane Melissa has now officially been described as a Category 5 storm which first hit the island’s southern coast with maximum sustained winds of 295 km/h(185mph)
Jamaica, this is not the time to be brave Jamaica’s Minister of Local government and Community Development, Desmond Mckenzie said on Tuesday. Word Meteorological Organisation tropical cyclone specialist, Anne Claire Fontan said in advance of the storm: ”it will be the storm of the century for sure”
The island nation of Jamaica lies in the Caribbean Sra and frequently experiences the effect of Atlantic tropical cyclones. tracking across the Caibbean with impacting stormss originating east of the Winward islands or in the southern Caribbean between Nicoragua and Columbia.
Jamaica hurricane activity has two climatologically favoured periods , the first lasting from August to mid September and the second occurring during the latter half of October.
The fact Melissa ranks as one of the strongest storms this century is frightening. The last direct hit in Jamaica was storm Gilbert in 1988 which was a category 3. It destroyed thousands of homes and killed 49 people. Storm Dean and Storm Beryl in 2007 and 2024 respectively, came close, but were no match for storm Melissa. Jamaica’s Prime Minister has warned that no infrastructure can withstand a category 5”.
