Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker testified on Tuesday. Pecker’s revelations offered a glimpse into the intricate web of hush money payments and tabloid tactics allegedly orchestrated by Trump to suppress damaging stories during his 2016 presidential bid.
Pecker, aged 72, disclosed details of the Enquirer’s practice of “catch and kill,” wherein stories detrimental to Trump’s candidacy were buried to protect his image.
The Enquirer, under Pecker’s direction, allegedly paid individuals for their silence, including former Playboy model Karen McDougal and Trump Tower doorman Dino Sajudin, who claimed Trump fathered a child with a maid.
During his testimony, Pecker recounted a pivotal 2015 meeting with Trump, during which he pledged the Enquirer’s support for the billionaire candidate and promised to shield him from negative publicity.
This alleged agreement laid the groundwork for suppressing stories of Trump’s alleged extramarital affairs and sexual misconduct, according to prosecutors.
The trial’s focus revolves around accusations that Trump criminally falsified business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels, who claims to have had a sexual encounter with him a decade earlier.
