European military forces from NATO countries including France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden have begun arriving in Greenland in a show of support for Denmark and its semiautonomous territory after diplomatic talks with the United States ended in a “fundamental disagreement” over the island’s future and strategic role.

The deployment — part of a planned defensive operation dubbed Operation Arctic Endurance — aims to bolster Arctic security and signal European unity in the face of heightened tensions with Washington about its intentions in the region.

On Wednesday in Washington, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met with U.S. officials including Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The talks were intended to clarify U.S. policy toward Greenland — but instead exposed deep divisions.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said afterward that there remained a “fundamental disagreement” with the United States over the island’s long-term future. Rasmussen stressed that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and not open to being absorbed or controlled by any other nation.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking separately from the talks, reiterated that Washington believes it must play a more direct role in Arctic security, suggesting Russia and China could otherwise assert influence. “If we don’t go in, Russia is going to go in and China is going in,” he said — comments that alarmed Danish and European officials.

While both sides maintained that dialogue would continue, the gap in positions remains stark — particularly over U.S. rhetoric that Danish leaders have described as tantamount to a bid for control of Greenland.

The first elements of the European deployment are small contingents — about 15 French soldiers from a mountain infantry unit and a 13-person German reconnaissance team have already reached the capital, Nuuk, with additional units from Norway, Sweden, and other allies expected to follow.
Officials in Copenhagen have framed this build up as a necessary precaution: Greenland sits at a strategic nexus between North America and Europe and is rich in untapped natural resources, including critical minerals essential for advanced technologies.

Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the increased NATO presence — including aircraft, ships, and troops — as a response to an unpredictable security environment and not a direct counter to the United States. Still, European participation underscores broader concerns about Washington’s approach and NATO cohesion.

In Nuuk, reactions among Greenland residents have been mixed. Some expressed relief that allied support was visible, while others questioned whether the troop deployments might escalate tensions. Many insisted that Greenland should remain under Danish sovereignty and not become a bargaining chip between global powers.

From the NATO perspective, the Arctic is increasingly seen as a zone requiring collective defense planning. A NATO official speaking anonymously confirmed that members are exploring collaborative measures to enhance the alliance’s footprint across the High North.

Despite the disagreements, both sides agreed to establish a high-level working group intended to keep discussions open and identify areas of mutual concern — particularly around Arctic security — without compromising the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.

European deployments in Greenland signal a broader shift in transatlantic relations. They highlight rising European willingness to assert security interests independently, even as NATO remains the foundational security framework for the continent. Analysts suggest this moment could reshape how the alliance engages in the Arctic, balancing deterrence, diplomacy, and cooperation with global partners.
