EU To Back Down On Free Movement In Remarkable Brexit U Turn

By Eric King-

The EU is reportedly about to back down back down in its original insistence that Britain would not remain in the single market.  The remarkable back track will keep the Uk in the single market only for goods. In this scenario,  free movement will be stopped, whilst border controls will be brought in. The move is expected to be proposed at a summit of EU member states in Salzburg, Austria, next month.

The news is a remarkable U turn  from Michel Barnier, EU’s chief Brexit negotiator and a reversal of one of their historic ‘red lines.’ Uk prime minister, Theresa May has been determined to avoid a no deal scenario with the EU, but fears have been expressed that it would affect the possibility of Britain having free trade deals with other parts of the world.  U.S president, Donald Trump, has always promised to support Britain, given the strong historical alliance between Britain and America. There have been some concerns that the American president is unpredictable and could change his position  at any time, but those concerns are probably just scepticism.

Trump has many fans, but also legions of critics; he did not sound very positive during his last visit to the Uk about the process and path Brexit talks were taking. This does not mean America will shut its trade doors to Britain, but many Mps and journalists are worried that Eu demands are heading towards compromising Britain’s potential trading relationship with the rest of the world. With March, 2019, only about six months away, the months ahead will reveal a lot.

The proposals for a U turn by the EU will come with its own demands, as Brussels will demand its own concessions in return for this deal, such as pledging that the UK will copy all new EU social, customs and environmental rules.

Tory backbencher, Andrew Bridgen, told reporters at the Uk Daily Express that the European Union will “come back for more” in Brexit negotiations and will demand further concessions.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Bridgen said: “What’s clear is you can’t appease a bully.“The European Union are trying to bully us and they’ll only come back for more.“The moment  Theresa May is faced with further concessions than the already very weak Chequers proposals, I think she’ll have a raft of further resignations”. With the good news of a potential deal on the negotiating table, there will be room for further discussions at a special meeting of all 28 EU leaders in Salzburg, Austria, next month. This sudden reversal might be the beginning of unlocking the seeming impasse that has frustrated talks with the EU for this long, but it might also be a process to pushing Britain into a tight corner to make a lot more concessions.
