Employee fined after for stealing parcels from Yorkshire delivery van

By David Young-

A worker stole parcels from a Yorkshire delivery base within a month of starting work there, magistrates heard.

Charlie Boardman, 27,  exploited his position  as an employee at the warehouse of DPD’s Poppleton depot, in York, to repack parcels that had become damaged during transit, said Alison Whiteley, prosecuting. He was caught after  management decided to check its internal CCTV following missing parcels, and saw him in the drivers’ area when he had no business to be.

CCTV filmed him taking a parcel from the drivers’ area to a different area of the warehouse, where he opened it. Inside was an iPhone worth £250 which he stole.

He was also caught on CCTV stealing a blue Regatta outdoor coat worth £100. Both thefts happened on September 11.

Southampton Police attended an address in Bassett in the early hours of this morning (Monday 22 December), where a large number of items were seized.

Defence solicitor James Dixon said Boardman was under a lot of stress in his private life at the time.

“He is unable to give an explanation why he committed this offence and wasn’t sleeping properly,” said Mr Dixon. “He has acted out of character”.

Boardman, of Lindsey Avenue, Acomb, York, pleaded guilty to theft by employee of both items. He had been employed by an agency and no longer works at the depot.

York magistrates fined Boardman £120 and ordered him to pay £350 compensation, plus a £48 statutory surcharge, plus £85 prosecution costs.

Ms Whiteley said Boardman worked at the depot for four weeks before his arrest. On September 16, the security manager confronted Boardman over the theft and although Boardman initially denied all knowledge, once he was shown the CCTV of his actions, he admitted he had stolen both of them.

Mr Dixon said he now had a £120 a week job as a cleaner and was doing his best to provide for his family.
