WHY DOGS ATTACK THEIR OWNERS

WHY DOGS ATTACK THEIR OWNERS

BY CHRIS WILLIAMS

Exactly why dogs sometimes attack their owners, is an important question.

Numerous stories over the years of dogs attacking their owners make for frightening and disheartening reading. Nobody deserves to get attacked and killed by a dog, least of all, th dog’s owner.

The announced death of a man in Cleator Moor after being attacked by his  pit bull Staffordshire dog is truly sad.

Police were called at 2 pm yesterday (May 22) to a property on Robert Owen Avenue, Cleator Moor, after a report of a male being attacked by a dog. His daughter, Linda Redbridge and Carla, tried in vain to save their dad, Stephen, by pulling the dog off him. Dogs are meant to be servants of their masters, not attackers. The way a dog response to his owner depends in many ways on the way the owner treats their dog Responsible owners.take care of their dogs, by feeding them and exercising them regularly.

Owners who do not take their dogs on regular walks and feed them and regular intervals, risk alienating that dog and bringing out the worst out of them. Pent up anger in dogs are unhealthy for their well being. Being a responsible owner of a dog also includes not elevating the status of the dog from that of animal to that of human being. Some owners allow their dogs to walk ahead of them, but the truth is that the owner should always walk ahead to reinforce their leadership over that dog. When a dog is made to be accustomed to walk ahead of their owner, a misleading perception may be planted in the dog’s psyche.that he or she is in charge to some degree.

This article is not designed to suggest that late Stephen was attacked and killed because he mistreated his dog, but to suggest some of the reasons dogs may attack their owners. There is a lot of ignorance in the world of dog owners, besides the basic and common knowledge known to those who own dog pets. Dogs should not be allowed for instance, to invite themselves to their owners bed or even chair. Mastery should always be maintained when dealing with your pet, though it should be done lovingly in order to maintain a good relationship. When a combination of wrong or mistaken practices are allowed to go on between an owner and its dog, the risk of the dog turning on its owner becomes high.

MENTAL ILLNESS

No dog attacks its owner for no reason. The reason can sometimes be the presence of mental illness in the dog, unknown to it’s owner. Dogs can become mentally ill for all sorts of complex reasons. Mental illness in a dog can be caused by all the  earlier potential causal elements that sometimes spark the kind of resentment in a dog for its owner that makes it attack him or her. Mental illness can come from abandonment by its owner for longer than advisable. Other times, it can be due to some internal complications beyond our understanding, but within the sphere of a vet’s expertise. This is why it is always advisable for a dog owner to take their dog for regular check ups. I own a dog myself and regularly take her for check ups. Regular check ups keep the owner well informed about the internal well being of the dog. It is not safe to be presumptive that dog is well, even though many owners are lucky to have healthy dogs because they take care of them. External factors can cause illness in their dogs.

FACTUAL HISTORY

In the absence of a detailed and specific factual history of  the relationship between the deceased man, Mr Moor, and his dog, and the medical condition of the dog, it is impossible to know precisely why his dog attacked and killed him. On behalf of the eye of medias.com, I express my condolences to the family of Stephen. It is an awful thing to loose a love one because they were attacked by their dog.My heart was deeply saddened by this story, and I thought it would be great to share my insight on dogs with all pet owners, because it is easy to take a lot of things for granted in the rearing of a dog. Dogs can be wonderful pets to have, but is very important to give you dog top class rearing.

A statement by a spokesman for Cambrian Police said: “A 45-year-old male – who lived at the property – was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The dog who attacked the male was destroyed. Three other dogs were seized from the property and will be assessed by a specialized police officer.

“The death is being treated as non-suspicious and the Coroner has been informed”
