A mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia on 10 February 2026 has left ten people dead including the suspected gunman and dozens injured, according to Canadian police.
The attack, which targeted Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a residence believed to be connected to the shooter has shocked the remote community of about 2,400 people, and sparked a national outpouring of grief and concern.
Authorities confirmed that the incident resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, and that there is no evidence of any ongoing threat to the public.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers first responded to reports of an “active shooter” at the high school at around 1:20 p.m. local time, and an emergency alert was issued for residents to shelter in place as police worked to secure the area. When officers entered the school, they found several victims and subsequently discovered additional bodies at a nearby residence.
The suspected shooter was also found dead inside the school from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said they believe the person described in the call and the subsequent alerts is the same individual found deceased.
The RCMP confirmed that six victims were found dead at the school, one person died while being transported to hospital, and two others were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the attack. In total, ten lives were lost in the shooting, making it one of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history.
In addition to those killed, at least 27 people were injured, with several taken to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries and others receiving treatment for less severe wounds.
Local authorities said all remaining students and staff were evacuated safely once the danger was contained, and schools in the district have been closed for the week to allow for counselling and recovery efforts. The high school, which serves students from grades 7 through 12, is a focal point of the community, and residents are struggling to come to terms with the scale of the tragedy.
Heartbreak in a Close-Knit Community
The aftermath of the shooting has left Tumbler Ridge residents and officials grappling with grief, shock and disbelief. Premier David Eby of British Columbia described the shooting as an “unimaginable tragedy” that challenges the sense of safety in communities across the province. The violence, he said, feels like something that “happens in other places” and not in a quiet, rural town.
Prime Minister Mark Carney also reacted with deep sorrow, expressing that Canadians are grieving with the families and friends of those affected. He canceled planned travel to Germany in response to the shooting, underscoring the national impact of the event, which has reignited public sorrow and debate over community safety.
Local residents described scenes of panic and heartbreak on social media and community forums. One resident recounting the emergency alert later shared fear and confusion as sirens filled the streets of Tumbler Ridge and families scrambled to locate loved ones during the crisis. Residents used social media platforms to coordinate information as police activity continued throughout the afternoon.
School boards and provincial authorities have mobilised support services for students, families, teachers and first responders. The Peace River South School District said counselling and mental health resources will be made available for the broader community, and psychiatric liaison nurses are on the ground to assist residents dealing with trauma and emotional shock. Officials emphasised that while such events are rare in Canada, the emotional and psychological toll can be profound and long-lasting.
The small town’s demographic, where many families know each other intimately, has intensified the sense of collective grief. Online and in person, community members expressed deep sorrow for those killed and injured, sharing memories of loved ones and calling for solidarity to support one another through an unprecedented crisis.
Police and emergency services have confirmed that they do not believe there are additional suspects at large. The RCMP’s Major Crime Section has taken over the investigation, working with local detachments and emergency crews to gather evidence and understand the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
While no motive has been publicly declared, authorities are continuing to interview witnesses and review video from the scene to build a clearer picture of the attack. (turn0search16; turn0search19)
As part of the ongoing investigation, the RCMP urged residents to follow official updates and remain patient as investigators work through the details of the case. Authorities emphasised that protecting the privacy of victims’ families is a priority, and that names of those killed and injured will be released only after next-of-kin notifications.
In the immediate aftermath, emergency services and volunteer groups collaborated to ensure that victims received timely medical care. Two of those injured were airlifted to larger hospitals outside Tumbler Ridge for intensive treatment, while others received care at local health facilities. The coordination between local medical staff and provincial emergency teams helped manage the influx of casualties.
The shooting has reignited discussion about gun violence and safety in Canada, a nation that has historically seen fewer mass shootings than many other developed countries. Although Canada implemented stricter firearm regulations in recent years particularly after high-profile tragedies like the Nova Scotia rampage and the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre incidents of gun violence continue to raise public concern and debate about whether current measures are sufficient.
Leaders at all levels have urged that while policy discussions are important, the immediate priority must be supporting the victims and allowing the community to grieve and begin the long road to recovery. Medical professionals and mental health experts emphasise that the collective trauma from such events can impact children, families and entire communities for years, necessitating ongoing support services.
Prime Minister Carney, at a statement following the tragedy, reiterated the nation’s solidarity with the Tumbler Ridge community and stressed that “Canadians are united in grief” as the country mourns those lost in the attack and stands with survivors and families in their recovery.
The impact of the shooting in Tumbler Ridge extends beyond a single community to a broader conversation about safety, mental health, and how nations confront gun violence.
Canadians are collectively grappling with grief for the lives lost a harsh reminder that even the most remote and close-knit communities are not immune to the pain inflicted by senseless acts of violence.
