Danny Benn: Fury Title Fight Shows Boxing Is Organisation Of Greed

By Gabriel Princewill-

Danny Benn, the outspoken brother of former middleweight world champion, Nigel Benn, has called boxing an organisation of greed. His attack comes following the match up of Tyson Fury and Deontey Wilder this December 1st, which he believes is purely money orientated.

Benn contacted The Eye Of Media.Com after the first press conference featuring both Fury and Wilder, but a full interview was not obtained until yesterday, after an initial schedule with Benn was scrapped over a week ago . Benn was a former amateur boxer whose career was cut short after he was attacked as a doorman in East London. He  is a vocal character who holds nothing back. Benn who praises his brother’s success in the ring is credited for influencing the first steps of Nigel Benn into a boxing ring that resulted in world championship honours.

The 57 year old Chelmsford resident said the mental and physical health of Tyson Fury appears to have been given inconsiderate thought in allowing him to participate in this fight against a prolific knock out merchant . Fury once suffered from mental health issues but has been given medical clearance to participate in this highly anticipated bout which takes place at the Staple Center in Los Angeles On December 1st.

Danny Ben says the decision to allow the two giants fight at this stage was wrong and shows boxing an organisation of greed. Benn told The Eye Of Media.Com that Fury has little chance of defeating Wilder because of his long hiatus from the boxing ring. He stated a view held by many, that the gypsy man should have been given at least two more fights before mixing it with the unbeaten American.

”Look, I have been in this game for decades and have always known that boxing is an organisation of greed. Greed has always been the problem of the world. How can anybody justify allowing a man just back from a mental health situation after 2 years away from the ring, to go straight into a world title fight, after two warm up fights, which you might as well call sparring sessions. They might as well have thrown him in with Wilder in his first fight back. Nobody can question Fury’s heart, but the time frame for this fight was too soon for him.

”This is all about money, he continued. Fury hasn’t had enough time to be ready for this fight, but he will have to be judged by his performance on the day. He has taken this fight for the pay day, and his promoter, Frank Warren, should know the fight is too soon. Warren is a big gun in the game, money talks, he won’t say no to a big money spinning deal from a fight like Tyson Fury against Deontey Wilder. They both talk a very good fight, but the question is whether Fury truly believes what he says. He sounds like he does.

”But when you are talking about a guy who has just recovered from mental health problems, the boxing organisations and promoters should be giving Fury a reality check. The WBC should have insisted that Fury has two meaningful fights first, but a high moral stand like that will mean missing out on the big cash that will flow from staging this kind of big fight. Fury is a gypsy man, he has to believe his hype because it has worked for him 27 times now.

‘He thinks his bigger size will win him the fight, but Wilder is going to be fit and hungry for this fight. Fury is saying he can’t loose to a 15 stonne guy, but what happens if Wilder turns up closer to 16 stone  and still very fit, I wonder where that will leave Fury”, Benn stated.

”Wilder has the eyes of a tiger, he pushed for the Anthony Joshua fight hard, but it didn’t work out. Fury hasn’t been a proper fight for a long time, he won’t be able to dig deep like Wilder can, that’s if he needs to dig that deep.

‘Why didn’t he take the Dillian Whyte fight, because it would risk loosing the big money from a Wilder fight which was on the table. Why didn’t he take the Bellew fight? Well, I don’t believe he was worried about the risk because Fury would have beaten Bellew any day, but it wasn’t worth the money.

He could have fought Chisora before fighting Wilder, but he won’t want to take the risk. Now, he has got Wilder, and  he is talking like he has already won, when he is up against a super fit champion who can can also punch.

SANCTION

The World Boxing Council could  indeed have refused to sanction the fight, but once boxers under a management team are prepared to train and fight, the rest is simply business.  Mix being a fight fan with the allure of staging a fight pitting two big giants brimming with confidence, and one can see why the boxing movers and shakers will not miss such an opportunity. In an ideal world, Tyson Fury should have had a few more fights before meeting with big punching Wilder. However, he will be judged by his decision to fight the American, and can only do his best.

Many observers are doubtful of Fury’s chances of success in his second world title fight, but nobody can say victory for the gypsy man on December 1st is impossible. It doesn’t seem likely, but title fights have never been won on the balance of probability.  Predictions about the eventual outcome will remain a conjecture until fight night comes. Fury may be saving his best performance until December, and his determination to win may make a show of the forthcoming contest.

Many fans are expecting a messy fight, but provided Fury survives the first four rounds, it would have been worth the show. If he wins, nobody will be able to shut him up.
