Authorities later formally charged them with espionage, serious allegations which they firmly deny. Mr. Bennett recently spoke to his mother for the second time since her detention, permitted a brief 20-minute call from prison just last Thursday.

Speaking with immense sadness, Mr. Bennett explained that his mother’s spirits were understandably low during the brief conversation. She specifically told him that the further recent court appearance last week had completely failed to deliver a positive outcome. “We had been told to expect a verdict rather than another appearance,” Mr. Bennett stated, showing his deep frustration. “I do not know exactly what that means, but I could feel she is losing hope.” This uncertainty adds crushing psychological pressure on the British couple detained in Iran and their worried relatives back home.
The Foremans were moved to different prisons in the Tehran area in August, only to be reunited at the notorious Evin prison in October.
