Council Tax Break Granted For Harrow Vulnerable Adults

By Chris Williamson-

Harrow Council have announced steps it is taking to provide the most vulnerable adults who have recently left the care system with a tax break.

Harrow council is preparing to facilitate the transition for vulnerable carer leavers between the ages of 18 and 25, in order to ease their transition from a care environment into independent adulthood in employment, training or education.

The plan will lessen the burden on care leavers to pay council tax, especially for those who have just left the system. An estimated 150 young people will be eligible for the exemption of six-months of council tax in the first year, Harrow council authorities have said.

Cllr Christine Robson, Harrow Council’s cabinet member for children, young people, and schools, said in a statement to The eye of media.com:

“All our work with our young people is designed to set them up with a fair start in life when they grow up.

“It can be a sudden and abrupt transition for care-leavers.
“This tax break is will take some of the sting out of that, and increase their chance of a successful, self-reliant and independent future.”

The scheme will starts at the beginning of the forthcoming financial year, in April.

Council tax can be an extra financial burden for those who cannot afford it but is one that cannot be legitimately be avoided today. Vulnerable adults who have just left the system need assistance to help them get on their feet and establish themselves, rather than pressure them with new demands. In this respect, the move by Harrow Council is most welcome.
