13 people have been killed and 50 injured after a van ploughed into crowds in Barcelona’s popular Las Ramblas tourist area, according to police and local officials say.
The vehicle sped without restraint along the pedestrian area, mowing down people and sending others running for cover. Police are treating the incident as terrorism. A man has been arrested in connection with the attack after initially fleeing on foot..
Police immediately cordoned off the area and have been investigating a separate van alleged to have been used as a getaway vehicle. Spanish police also released a photo of a Morroco born man named as Driss Oubakir, alleged to have rented the van used to drive into pedestrians. The attack is a fresh reminder of the real threat of terrorism in our modern day world where a few people have waged an indefinite war on the West as part of reprisals for foreign policy which they despise. The fact that other Muslims are also being killed in suicide attacks by Muslims does not figure much in their reasoning. Terrorism has become an accepted part of 21st century reality, with no part of the world completely free from terrorist acts. London, France, America, have all had their share of heart breaking terrorist attacks, with Spain also receiving such attacks from time to time. When the attack took place, the streets went in pandemonium as people including tourists ran for their lives, according to local reports. Barcelona is a popular tourist destination,with hundreds of Brits visiting every year, in particular the summer.
The identities of all the dead has not yet been disclosed, but will be in due course. Police, are in the meantime, trying to establish if the culprit was acting alone or in conjunction with other groups. One of the aims of terrorist acts like this is not only to kill and maim ordinary members of the public, but to also instil fear into people in the area and eventually affect the tourist industry. Spain has been recovering from a recession and do not need the extra hassle of terrorist acts designed to intimidate people and tourists. Spanish police will be eager to establish whether there is any connection between the man arrested for this offence, and any of the others or their associates, who were involved in the London attacks or any other terrorist attacks in the world. Terrorists are usually part of one of the terrorist networks in the world, although there have been a few incidences of lone wolf terrorists who wreak havoc because of their own self motivated reasons.
