Barcelona Agree £8.6m Deal for Arsenal Forward Gabriel Jesus as Brazil Star Nears Camp Nou Move

By James Simons-

Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Arsenal to sign Gabriel Jesus for £8.6 million (€10 million), with the Brazil international now edging closer to a move to Spain as the Catalan club continues to reshape its attacking options.

The two clubs are believed to have agreed the broad terms of the transfer, and are now working through the remaining details before the deal can be formally completed. While there are still elements of the agreement to be finalised, negotiations are understood to have progressed beyond an advanced stage, with plans already being made for Jesus to travel to Spain, potentially as early as Monday. The transfer is expected to be completed before Tuesday’s deadline.

The move would bring an end to Jesus’ four-year spell at Arsenal, where the forward arrived from Manchester City in 2022 for a reported £45m fee. His time in north London began with considerable promise, but injuries and competition for places have restricted his impact in recent seasons. The 29-year-old has scored 32 goals in 123 appearances for Arsenal, but made only three Premier League starts last season as his opportunities became increasingly limited.

Jesus’ most recent campaign was badly disrupted by a serious knee injury sustained during an FA Cup match against Manchester United in January 2025. The setback kept him out for much of the year and further complicated his attempts to establish himself as a regular member of Arsenal’s starting XI. With Mikel Arteta’s side continuing to strengthen its attacking options, the forward has now been allowed to pursue a fresh challenge.

Barcelona’s interest in Jesus comes as the club seeks to add greater depth and experience to its forward line. The Brazilian offers versatility, having operated both through the middle and from wider attacking positions during his career, while his previous experience in the Premier League and at Manchester City gives him a significant level of top-level experience.

The proposed transfer is also notable because Barcelona’s pursuit of Jesus does not appear to have ended its interest in another major attacking target. Sky Sports News reports that the deal for Jesus and the club’s interest in Julian Alvarez are being treated as completely separate matters. Barcelona could therefore still pursue Alvarez even if the agreement for Jesus is completed, suggesting the club may be considering more than one addition to its forward line.

For Jesus, a move to Barcelona would represent another major chapter in a career that has already taken him from Palmeiras to Manchester City, Arsenal and the Brazil national team. He joined City as a highly rated young forward and went on to win major domestic honours in England before moving to Arsenal. Although he has never quite reached the scoring levels some expected of him, his movement, work rate and ability to play across the front line have made him an important player at the highest level.

His international career has also entered a quieter period. Jesus has won 64 caps for Brazil but has not played for the national side since November 2023. His absence from recent Brazil squads has reflected both his injury problems and the fierce competition for attacking places, with the national team possessing a deep pool of forwards.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are attempting to strengthen their squad under head coach Hansi Flick as they look to maintain their challenge domestically and in Europe. Flick has publicly expressed satisfaction with the group at his disposal while acknowledging that sporting director Deco is continuing to work on potential reinforcements.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s meeting with Rayo Vallecano, Flick said he was happy with his squad and praised Deco’s work in the transfer market. The German coach suggested there was no need for the club to act out of desperation, insisting that Barcelona were “on a good path” while continuing to assess opportunities to improve the team.

The arrival of Jesus would give Flick another experienced attacking option and potentially provide greater flexibility in how Barcelona approach matches. His ability to play as a central striker or operate from the flank could prove particularly valuable over a long season in which the club will be competing across multiple competitions.

The departure represents another significant step in Arsenal’s efforts to manage its squad and generate funds from players who are no longer central to Arteta’s plans. The London club have already agreed another outgoing transfer, with midfielder Fabio Vieira set to join Hamburg in a deal understood to be worth around £7.7 million.

Vieira is travelling to Germany to complete the move, bringing his own Arsenal spell closer to an end. His departure, alongside Jesus’ expected transfer, highlights the scale of the squad changes taking place at the Emirates as Arsenal continue to fine-tune a team built to compete for major honours. Jesus’ move is now dependent on the two clubs completing the outstanding elements of their agreement and the player finalising the necessary formalities. Should everything proceed as expected, he could travel to Spain as early as Monday, bringing him closer to becoming a Barcelona player.

The £8.6m fee represents a significant reduction on the £45m Arsenal paid Manchester City for the forward four years ago, underlining how dramatically his circumstances have changed since arriving in north London. Yet Barcelona’s willingness to bring him in suggests the Catalan club still believes his experience, versatility and technical qualities can offer something valuable.
