Banned Social Worker Fooled HCPC When Applying To Become Member

By Gavin Mackintosh And Charlotte Webster

A social worker managed to fool the HCPC by applying to become a member of the regulatory body, despite being struck off from the register, a tribunal  has found. She had been caught supplying misleading information to register with the HCPC to become a membe rof their organisation, as a social worker.

The panel ruled that woman, whose identity they have not disclosed, “deliberately concealed her regulatory history” and “provided false information”.

The practitioner had applied under a new name and lied about her work history in an attempt to  register prematurely. This was despite the fact she had been removed from the register and was not eligible to reapply until a restoration period of five years had elapsed. The HCPC should ahve interceopted the application, but failed to identify the woman because her full details were not on record. The HCPC has so far been unable to explain to The Eye Of media.Com why they did not have effetive processes in place to disover her inavlid application earlier.

The dodgy woman had attempted to register with the HCPC as a social worker in October 2017. Her application included details of a social work diploma and detailed evidence of practise in America during 2001-2017. She deliberately failed to disclose that she had ever been disciplined by a professional or regulatory body. The panel noted that she had also signed  the declaration confirming the accuracy of the information.

In a damning verdict, the panel concluded the social worker had “deliberately sought to deceive the registrar” and said her application had been “fraudulent from the outset” The panel added that her application for admission would have been refused if her professional history had been “appropriately disclosed”.

Making matters worse was the fact that an accompanying covering letter stated that she had not officially practised social work in the UK.  Her web of lies escaped attention until  after she had been admitted to the role. The practitioner was informed she had been admitted to the register, via a letter dated 23 January 2018, and was valid to practise from 18 January 2018 to 30 November 2018.

On 25 April 2018, the HCPC received an email from the divisional manager of a social care recruitment agency, who raised concerns that the practitioner was actually the same social worker who had been struck off the register on 2 November 2016.
