Former Australian Catholic Bishop Charged With 19 Sexual Offences Rocks Church

A Catholic Church, Bishop Christopher Saunders, (pictured) emeritus of Broome in western Australia, has been charged with 19 sexual offenses.

The 74-year-old bishop was arrested on Wednesday, subsequently released on bail, and ordered to reside at his home until his next hearing in June.

The charges against Bishop Saunders include two counts of rape, 14 counts of unlawful and indecent assault, and three counts of indecently dealing with a child as a person in authority.

Sexual abuse scandals  have plagued the Catholic Church for years, and has contributed to tarnishing the image of the Church.

Sexual abuse by Church leaders is one of those news topics that quickly attracts global attention,  often spreading like wild fire on social media.

Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, Archbishop of Perth and President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, addressed the distressing situation in a statement, acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations and emphasizing the necessity of thorough investigation.

He affirmed the Church’s commitment to cooperating fully with law enforcement to ensure justice is served and to prevent any actions that might compromise ongoing investigations.

The path to Bishop Saunders’ charges was marked by initial challenges. Despite an initial police investigation closing without charge, Pope Francis intervened, ordering a canonical investigation under the provisions of Vos estis lux mundi, his 2019 motu proprio aimed at combating sexual abuse within the Church.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Brisbane oversaw the investigation, conducted by independent investigators, which culminated in a comprehensive 200-page report.

Following the submission of this report to Australian authorities, a new investigation into Bishop Emeritus Saunders was launched, leading to the recent charges against him.

Bishop Saunders, who resigned from his post in 2020, has stated his intention to plead not guilty to all allegations.

However, his case adds to the troubling pattern of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, raising questions about institutional accountability and the protection of vulnerable individuals.

The prevalence of sexual abuse scandals involving Catholic clergy worldwide highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms and greater transparency within the Church.

There continues to be searching questions as to how serial sex offenders get to top positions in the Catholic Church.
