This six-month programme, running from January to June next year, will select 12 young people aged 18-25 to become champions of justice within their communities. The programme’s relevance is significant, as it seeks to engage the next generation in understanding and advocating for the fundamental principles of the legal system, directly addressing potential disengagement and providing valuable skills and opportunities for young people. Applicants will be assessed against four criteria. Commitment to public service and the rule of law, communications skills and experience, community leadership or impact and creativity in reaching new audiences

The Young Ambassadors Programme, run by the Rule of Law Unit at the Attorney General’s Office, is a six-month initiative for 12 young people aged 18-25. Participants will engage in expert-led workshops, visit legal and political institutions, and attend a residential weekend focused on developing future leaders. A key activity involves designing and leading communications campaigns to engage their peers on the rule of law. The programme aims to develop participants’ leadership, advocacy, public engagement, and communication skills. Ambassadors will have the chance to interact with the Attorney General and Solicitor General. The programme is open to young people from across the UK and assesses applicants on criteria like commitment to public service, communication skills, community leadership, and creativity. Attorney General Richard Hermer KC stated the programme seeks to “listen to fresh perspectives” and “empower the next generation to lead conversations about justice”.

The Young Ambassadors Programme is relevant in several ways.  It helps connect Youth with the Justice System
The programme aims to bridge the gap between young people and traditional legal institutions by involving them in promoting the rule of law. It provides a platform for young voices, making the legal system more accessible and relatable to their peers.

It encourages civic engagement and understanding because by learning about the rule of law, ambassadors can become informed advocates for democratic and legal principles, which is crucial in an age of potential misinformation. This aligns with other initiatives that aim to improve young people’s understanding of democracy.

The programme also  helps develop valuable skills like advocacy, public speaking, campaign management, and teamwork. Access to high-level figures and institutions offers networking and mentoring opportunities, similar to other ambassador schemes that provide a “springboard” for participants’ careers and by  recruiting a diverse group from across the UK and considering “lived experience,” the programme promotes an inclusive approach to justice that reflects the realities of young people.

The initiative also  gives young people a genuine voice and the chance to influence discussions on justice, which is a core element of effective youth engagement programmes. The ambassadors’ campaigns aim to inform how their generation understands and interacts with the justice system.
