At least 55 people, predominantly students, sustained injuries after a sudden series of multiple explosions ripped through a mosque situated within a school compound in Indonesia.
The frightening blasts occurred during crowded Friday prayers in the Kelapa Gading neighborhood of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The incident sent worshippers running in sheer panic as thick, grey smoke rapidly filled the entire building. The severity of the event immediately triggered a massive response from emergency services and law enforcement personnel.
Witnesses reporting to local television outlets described hearing two distinct, loud blasts around midday, occurring just as the weekly sermon began inside the mosque. The mosque is located within the grounds of SMA 27, a state high school situated inside a secured navy compound. Students and others immediately rushed from the building as the smoke made breathing impossible, leading to a chaotic scene of evacuation.

The city’s police chief, Asep Edi Suheri, confirmed the casualty figures, noting that most victims suffered injuries from flying glass shards and debris, a detail suggesting a pressure effect from the device used. Multiple casualties were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Currently, approximately 20 students remain hospitalized, with three individuals requiring continuous care due to the seriousness of their injuries.
In a rapid development following the explosions, police quickly identified a 17-year-old male as the suspected perpetrator of the attack. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, the country’s deputy house speaker, confirmed the suspect was immediately taken into custody and is presently undergoing emergency surgery for injuries sustained during the incident.
Police chief Suheri noted that the exact cause of the explosions is not yet known, though preliminary findings suggest the blasts originated from a location close to the mosque’s loudspeaker system. The quick identification of the teenager has focused the investigation on determining both the motive and how the explosive devices were constructed and deployed.
A specialized bomb squad was instantly deployed to the scene to secure the area and conduct a comprehensive search for additional hazards or evidence. During their sweep, the squad found several toy rifles and a toy gun abandoned nearby, further adding to the complexity of the ongoing investigation.

The involvement of a minor and the discovery of non-lethal items near the powerful explosions raise critical questions about the intent behind the attack and the possible sophistication of the device used. The possibility of the suspect being linked to extremist groups or acting alone is now the central focus of the police inquiry.
Police chief Suheri strongly urged the public to avoid speculation concerning the cause or motive of the Jakarta Mosque Explosions until the official police investigation is fully completed. He assured the public that the authorities are working diligently and will convey all conclusive results transparently once the evidence has been thoroughly processed.
The nature of the attack—targeting a house of worship within a school compound—has naturally caused immense alarm across Indonesia. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, has unfortunately faced challenges from domestic extremist groups in the past, making security at religious sites a constant priority. The fact that the victims were predominantly students emphasizes the vulnerability of the target and the indiscriminate nature of the violence. Authorities face significant pressure to quickly determine whether the Jakarta Mosque Explosions represent an isolated criminal act, a premeditated attack by an extremist cell, or a tragic accident involving an improvised device.
Security has been significantly enhanced around schools and other public buildings across Jakarta as a precautionary measure. The incident highlights the difficult challenge of maintaining security in large, complex urban centers while respecting the fundamental freedoms of worship and assembly. Furthermore, the use of a mosque inside a school environment presents unique concerns for parents and the navy personnel living within the secured compound. The government must provide timely, factual updates to reassure communities about their safety measures and the overall stability of the capital. The comprehensive police operation underway must conclusively establish the type of explosive employed and the suspect’s level of external support. Indonesia’s efforts against terrorism remain continuous.
