Hijack attempt: Pilot stabbed in cockpit as Israel-bound flydubai jet makes emergency landing in Saudi Arabia

By Aaron Miller-

An Israel-bound flydubai passenger aircraft was plunged into a mid-air crisis on Wednesday after one of its pilots allegedly attacked and stabbed his colleague inside the cockpit, triggering a rapid descent, emergency signals and a desperate diversion to Saudi Arabia. The Boeing 737, operating Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, eventually landed safely at Tabuk, but only after passengers and crew were reportedly forced to intervene in an extraordinary struggle that Israeli officials are investigating as a possible attempted terrorist attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the incident could have ended in a “major disaster”, alleging that one of the pilots had attempted to crash the aircraft after attacking the other. According to Netanyahu, passengers and crew members helped prevent the alleged attack, while the pilot accused of carrying out the stabbing was arrested by Saudi authorities after the plane landed. The claims have not yet been independently established by Saudi investigators or flydubai, which has confirmed only that the aircraft experienced an incident and landed safely with its passengers accounted for.

The first signs that something was seriously wrong emerged while the aircraft was flying over the region. Flight-tracking data indicated that the aircraft experienced a dramatic loss of altitude, dropping thousands of feet in a very short period before emergency signals were transmitted. The aircraft first issued the international 7700 general-emergency code and later transmitted 7500, a code associated with unlawful interference, before subsequently returning to the general-emergency signal. It then diverted towards Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

For passengers, the meaning of those signals would have been impossible to know at the time. Inside the cabin, however, witnesses described a terrifying sequence of events. Passenger Miryam Shira Ohayon said the aircraft appeared to be “pretty much out of control” when the confrontation occurred. She described a situation in which people feared the plane was going to crash and said passengers and others aboard the aircraft intervened to restrain the alleged attack.

The cockpit, normally the most controlled and secure environment on a commercial aircraft, had suddenly become the centre of the emergency. According to accounts cited by Israeli officials, the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain before cabin crew entered the cockpit. Other qualified pilots were reportedly able to assist in regaining control of the aircraft and diverting it towards Saudi Arabia. Both pilots were later taken to hospital with injuries. The aircraft’s safe landing brought an immediate crisis to an end, but it also opened a far more difficult investigation. why would a trained commercial pilot allegedly attack his colleague and apparently attempt to bring down an aircraft carrying scores of passengers? At present, there is no confirmed public answer.

One possibility being examined by Israeli authorities is that the episode was deliberate and politically motivated. Israeli officials speaking to Reuters said their current assessment was that the incident could represent an attempted terror attack and said they did not believe it was connected to a mental-health issue involving either pilot. That is an assessment by Israeli authorities, however, rather than an established finding of the investigation. Another possibility raised in early reporting is that the apparent attempt to crash the aircraft could have been a suicidal act rather than a conventional terrorist operation. Some reports have described the incident in those terms, with the sudden descent and reported struggle in the cockpit prompting investigators to consider whether the pilot may have intended to die along with the aircraft’s occupants. At this stage, there is no publicly established evidence demonstrating that this was the motive

A third possibility is that investigators could discover a personal dispute or sudden confrontation between the pilots that escalated catastrophically. The earliest official description from an Israeli source was not of a hijacking but of a physical altercation between the pilots. That distinction is important because it leaves open the possibility that the violence began for reasons unrelated to terrorism, even though the consequences in the cockpit rapidly created a potentially catastrophic aviation emergency.

Investigators will therefore be looking closely at what happened in the minutes before the reported stabbing. They will need to establish whether there was an argument, whether the alleged attacker deliberately sought control of the aircraft, what actions were taken on the flight deck during the descent, and whether the emergency codes were transmitted deliberately by one of the pilots or automatically or manually as the struggle unfolded. Israeli officials have said it was not immediately clear who transmitted the emergency signals

The question of motive will be particularly important because the alleged sequence of events is radically different depending on what investigators ultimately establish. If the attack was politically motivated, it would represent an attempted assault carried out from inside the cockpit by someone entrusted with operating the aircraft. If it was a suicide attempt, investigators would instead be examining the personal circumstances and behaviour of the pilot. If it began as a confrontation between colleagues, the central issue would become how an apparently ordinary professional dispute escalated into violence capable of endangering an entire aircraft.

The geopolitical circumstances have also magnified the significance of the incident. The aircraft was carrying mostly Israeli passengers and was travelling between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, while the emergency landing took place in Saudi Arabia, a country that does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel. The safe diversion therefore required authorities on the ground to respond to an Israeli-bound passenger aircraft during an unfolding security emergency. The incident prompted urgent security consultations in Israel, with Netanyahu monitoring the situation and Israeli military officials conducting their own assessment. Israeli authorities also took precautions while the nature of the emergency was being established. Yet officials initially stressed that the episode was not believed to be a conventional hijacking, illustrating how quickly the understanding of the incident evolved as more information emerges.

The airline has so far used cautious language, saying the flight experienced an “incident” and was diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely. Saudi airport authorities said the pilots were injured and hospitalised, while passengers were assisted after arriving at the airport. A replacement aircraft was reportedly being arranged to continue their journey.  One passenger’s account suggested that people aboard the aircraft believed they were facing the possibility of death. Reports described passengers and crew rushing towards the cockpit and helping to restrain the alleged attacker. A doctor also reportedly assisted the injured pilots, while others helped care for passengers after the aircraft was diverted.

That intervention may ultimately prove to be one of the most significant elements of the investigation. A commercial airliner is designed around multiple layers of safety, but the cockpit is deliberately isolated from the cabin. The reported decision by crew members and passengers to intervene during an unfolding cockpit emergency appears to have been critical in allowing control of the aircraft to be restored. The precise sequence of that intervention remains part of the investigation. The dramatic flight data will also provide investigators with an important timeline. The aircraft was cruising at high altitude before experiencing a sudden descent and later stabilising at a lower level. Such data cannot, by itself, establish what happened inside the cockpit, but it can help investigators reconstruct the aircraft’s movements alongside cockpit recordings, communications with air-traffic control, emergency signals and testimony from passengers and crew

The cockpit voice recorder and flight-data recorder are likely to be especially important. Investigators will want to know what was said immediately before the confrontation, whether any warning signs were audible, who was controlling the aircraft at each stage of the descent and how the aircraft was eventually stabilised. Medical examinations of both pilots and evidence recovered from the cockpit could also help establish how the confrontation unfolded. Until that evidence is examined, the most dramatic claims surrounding the flight must remain allegations rather than established facts.

What is established is that Flight FZ1073 did not complete its journey to Tel Aviv as planned. It encountered a serious onboard emergency, transmitted distress signals, diverted to Saudi Arabia and landed safely at Tabuk. Both pilots were injured and taken to hospital, while the passengers survived an incident that had, for a period, threatened to become an aviation catastrophy . The investigation now turns from survival to explanation. Authorities will be expected to determine who initiated the violence, what happened inside the cockpit, why the aircraft descended so rapidly, who sent the emergency signals and, most importantly, what drove the alleged attacker to turn against his fellow pilot. Until those questions are answered, the motive remains the missing piece of an extraordinary story: a routine commercial flight that suddenly became a struggle for control at 30,000 feet, and a passenger aircraft that came within the shadow of disaster before being brought safely to the ground in Saudi Arabia.
