Kidd Leaves a Complicated Legacy
Kidd departs Dallas with one of the most complicated coaching legacies in recent franchise history. A Hall of Fame point guard and key member of the Mavericks’ 2011 championship team, Kidd returned to Dallas in 2021 hoping to guide the organization back into title contention. Initially, the partnership appeared successful.
In his first season as coach, Kidd led Dallas to the Western Conference finals behind Dončić’s rise into superstardom. Two years later, the Mavericks reached the NBA Finals before losing to the Boston Celtics. Those playoff runs restored credibility to a franchise that had struggled for consistency following the retirement of Dirk Nowitzki.
But the relationship between Kidd and the organization gradually became more fragile amid roster instability and front-office turmoil. Reports frequently linked Kidd to disagreements involving player rotations, team culture and long-term planning.
