British Couple Released After Months of Taliban Detention

By Ben Kerrigan-

A happy reunion has occurred for an elderly British couple held for months in Afghanistan. Peter and Barbie Reynolds, aged 80 and 76 respectively, had been running a training program in the country where they lived for 18 years. On February 1, they were detained by the Taliban’s interior ministry. They were held without any specific charges being brought against them for many months. The British couple released from detention have since been reunited with their daughter.

The pair were initially moved to a maximum-security prison in Kabul in March. Later, they were transferred to Kabul’s central prison. Their son, Jonathan, confirmed to reporters that they had not been given a reason for their arrest. The family stated that the couple was investigated for various things, including flying a drone which they do not own. He also mentioned that his parents had sold all their possessions and would be returning to the UK with only the clothes they were wearing when they left.

The British Couple Released Expresses Gratitude

Their freedom was secured through mediation led by Qatar. Upon arriving in Doha, they were joyfully reunited with their daughter, Sarah. The couple told Sky News that they were “very thankful” for the efforts made on their behalf. They also stated that they had been “treated very well,” which was in contrast to a previous report from their son and the UN. A Taliban spokesperson claimed the couple had “violated Afghan law” but did not specify the law. Meanwhile, the UK’s special envoy to Afghanistan said that it remained “unclear” what grounds they were detained on.
