A Metropolitan Police officer, Pc Ben Bunsell, has been found guilty of stalking his ex-girlfriend in the aftermath of their breakup.
Pc Ben Bunsell, attached to the Central South Command Unit faced trial at City of London Magistrates’ Court, where he denied but was ultimately convicted of one count of stalking without fear, alarm, or distress.
The offense occurred between June 23 and July 28 this year while Bunsell was off-duty.
During the one-day trial, it was revealed that the 40-year-old police officer tormented his ex-girlfriend, Natalie Jundo, by persistently contacting her through various means such as messaging, emailing, and calling, following the end of their relationship.
District judge Briony Clarke, who presided over the case, found Bunsell guilty, stating that his actions collectively amount to harassment and are associated with stalking.
The alarming details emerged during the trial, including Bunsell sending over 770 messages to Ms. Jundo, some labeled as “very unpleasant” by the judge.
Additionally, he made phone calls using a withheld number and sent emails from an unknown address. Ms. Jundo testified that the relentless communication left her tormented, making it challenging to use her phone.
A disturbing number of cases where individuals entrusted with upholding the law have been implicated in abusive behavior. The need for comprehensive measures to address and prevent such incidents is evident.
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards is already involved, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The sentencing on January 18 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court will be closely watched as the justice system responds to this troubling incident.
