The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly preparing for one of the most unexpected developments in the royal drama of the past decade: a return to Britain, just six years after their decision to step back from royal duties and establish a new life in the United States.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are understood to be planning a move later this month, with their new home expected to be a private, non-royal residence somewhere in the English countryside rather than London. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have reportedly already been enrolled in British schools, suggesting that the move is not simply a temporary visit but a significant change in the family’s long-term arrangements.

According to reports, the Cotswolds and the Northampton area are among the locations being considered. The latter would place the Sussex family relatively close to Althorp, the ancestral estate of Harry’s late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. That geographical connection may carry an additional emotional significance for Harry, whose relationship with Britain has remained complicated since his departure from royal life.
The timing is particularly striking because the couple’s return comes after years of bitter tensions with senior members of the Royal Family. Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back as working royals in 2020 — a rupture quickly dubbed “Megxit” — marked one of the most consequential crises to hit the monarchy in modern times. The couple subsequently moved to California, where they built commercial projects and charitable ventures while becoming increasingly outspoken about their experiences within the institution.
Harry’s interviews, the couple’s Netflix documentary and his memoir, Spare, intensified the dispute. His allegations concerning his brother, Prince William, his father, King Charles, and other members of the family exposed divisions that had previously been largely kept behind palace walls. Relations with the Prince and Princess of Wales have remained particularly strained, and there has been little evidence in recent years of a full reconciliation.

Against that background, a permanent or semi-permanent return to Britain raises obvious questions. The move does not appear to represent a restoration of the Sussexes’ former royal position. They are expected to remain private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family, with no return to the controversial “half-in, half-out” arrangement that they once sought. In other words, the Sussexes may be coming back to Britain without coming back to the institution from which they walked away.
That distinction could prove crucial. The move may represent an attempt by Harry and Meghan to create a more practical relationship with Britain while accepting that the old royal arrangement is unlikely to return. For Harry in particular, living in Britain could make it easier to maintain connections with his family, his charitable interests and the country in which he spent most of his life.
There may also be a more personal explanation. Harry has long spoken about the importance of his children knowing their British heritage. Archie and Lilibet have spent most of their lives in the United States, far removed from the country, traditions and family history associated with their father. A move to England could therefore be an attempt to give them a closer connection to their paternal family and to the royal heritage into which they were born.
King Charles is understood to have been informed of the planned move only days before it became public. Despite the complicated history between father and son, the King is reportedly welcoming the prospect of seeing more of his grandchildren. Charles’s own health may also make family proximity more significant than it might have been several years ago.
Yet the move could equally be driven by practical considerations. Harry’s work with veterans and charitable organisations has increasingly focused on Britain as well as international causes. Returning to the UK could provide a stronger base for those activities, while allowing the Sussexes to retain their independence from the monarchy.
Security has also been a longstanding issue for Harry. His legal battles over taxpayer-funded protection have demonstrated how seriously he views the risks associated with returning to Britain. A permanent residence, rather than repeated short visits, could potentially make security arrangements more manageable, although it would not resolve the dispute over his official protection.
Ultimately, the Sussexes’ return may be less a royal comeback than an attempt to redefine what Britain means to them. Six years after leaving, Harry and Meghan appear to be testing whether they can build a life in the country without returning to the royal system they rejected. If they succeed, the move could quietly mark the beginning of a more pragmatic chapter. If old grievances resurface, however, their return could reopen one of the monarchy’s most enduring family conflicts.
Either way, the decision represents a remarkable reversal. The couple who once crossed the Atlantic in search of distance from royal life may now be preparing to bring their American-born children back to Britain — not as working royals, but as members of a family whose history remains impossible to escape.
