Parliament’s Approval Of Legislation To Block Brexit No Deal Complicates Matters

By Tony O'Riley-

A legislation to block a Brexit no deal   approved by Parliament, frustrating Boris Johnson’s agenda to prorogue Parliament, despite the backing given by the High Court today.  The motion was tabled by senior Labour backbencher Hilary Benn after MPs took control of the Commons agenda. The bill designed to stop Boris Johnson taking the UK out of the EU on 31 October without a Brexit agreement will become law on Monday  and received the royal assent.

The  outcome can be seen as a contradiction to Court rulings this week permitting the Uk prime minister to suspend Parliament, as it further frustrates Johnson’s plans to force Brexit, with or without a deal. It also makes the prospect  a snap general election in October or November more likely.

Boris Johnson says the legislation will “scupper” his chances of negotiating a Brexit deal with the EU, giving the EU more confidence that the British government’s plans to leave the EU will be delayed further. The bill compels the prime minister to request an extension to Brexit negotiations to the end of January next year unless he can secure a deal or parliamentary approval for no-deal by 19 October.

The British government is set to make a second bid on Monday to use a motion in the Commons to trigger a snap election on 15 October. The legislation requires a two-thirds majority in the Commons to trigger an election, but bound to face strong opposition from opposing Mps.
