The 35-year-old Londoner has not fought for 3 years when he last knocked out Derek Chisora in 5 rounds in Upton Park. His 33 year old opponent has won 31 out of 32 fights, with 26 of those wins coming by way of knock out.

“I could have picked an easier opponent,” said Haye. “I could have fought someone who’d been knocked out a couple of times but I wanted to give people someone to get excited ab

“He is top 10. I don’t want to fight complete nobodies. I believe if I can do what I’m doing in the gym on 16 January then I’ll be better than I used to be.” Haye was last scheduled to fight Tyson Fury in 2013, but pulled out twice because of a shoulder injury. Before that, he also pulled out from a fight against Manuel Charr , and was eventually facing retirement after medical advice not fight again.

However, after a few years out, the Bermondsey former fighter has expressed a wish to return and eventually secure a blockbuster fight against Anthony Joshua, then finally face reigning champion, Klitschko, who will defend his belts against Tyson Fury this weekend in Germany.

Haye has seen three previous attempts to return to the ring aborted because of injury.
After pulling out of a bout with Manuel Charr because of a hand injury in 2013, Haye then saw two fights against Fury cancelled because of a shoulder injury he sustained. Fury has since been scathing of Haye, claiming the Londoner lost his bottle and withdrew because of concern of defeat. However, Haye has vowed to fight Fury if he beats Wladimir Klitschko in Germany this weekend.
