Theresa May Claims Calm Leadership To See Of Tory Rebels

By Ben Kerrigan-

Theresa May has seen off rebels plotting to bring down her premiership by telling reporters she has the full support of her cabinet.

Up to 30 Tory MPs led by former party chairman, Grant Shapps, attempted in vain to topple the UK prime minister

Grant Sharps, a former party chairman, told reporters that both Remainers and Brexiteers were among about 30

Conservative MPs who are eager to see the back of the prime minister.

However, Theresa May told reporters that she provides calm leadership, stating: “Now what the country needs is calm leadership, and that’s what I am providing with the full support of my Cabinet.”

The Prime Minister insisted she was delivering the deal on Brexit, despite the rocky path talks have taking in the last couple of months. May also said she had provided real momentum” to withdrawal negotiations on Brexit, a claim EU chiefs will not share. Johnson’s own popularity among party Mps has never been consistent or sufficient, his best chance was when David Cameron resigned following the Brexit referendum in June 2016.The conservative Foreign Secretary is still a big shot in the conservative party whose reputation has often been shaken by a series o public blunders

May’s internal adversaries had hoped to pressure May to go “privately” and stand down, but after Mr Shapp’s name was leaked to the press, a number of Mps were vocal against his treacherous plot. Crucially, those against the prime minister’s leadership were not united on who should replace her, even though Boris Johnson would normally be expected to be a front runner to replace May in the event of a successful coup against the prime minister.

Some Mps rallied around the prime minister to lend their support to her leadership. Home Secretary, Amber Rudd said the prime minister must press on with her social justice agenda, insisting that “She should stay.”

Environmental Secretary, Michael Gove, supported Theresa May by insisting the whole Cabinet and the “overwhelming majority” of Tory members “want the Prime Minister to focus on the job that 14million people elected her to do earlier this year”. Theresa May’s position for now is very much secure and in tact, but the plot to oust her must be a wake up call for her to press forward sharply and continuously demonstrate her leadership by delivering smart responses to the challenges that face her party and Britain in general.

Brexit negotiations have been tough, though the delay in establishing a sensible fee for the divorce bill from the EU has not been very helpful. EU chiefs are not exactly the easiest to deal with, especially with their once expressed determination to give Britain a hard time in the process of Brexit, aimed at making the UK regret the vote to leave the European Union. The internal squabble over May’s leadership must be quickly brushed aside otherwise it will go down very badly with the public more especially in the event of another election which will have to happen soon.
