Monarchs and heads of state from around the globe recently descended upon Giza to attend the official Grand Egyptian Museum Inauguration, signaling the beginning of a new era for Egypt’s cultural landscape. Located strategically near the iconic Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, the colossal facility immediately claims the title of the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single ancient civilization.

Two decades in the making, the GEM represents a staggering $1 billion (£760 million) investment and spans an impressive 500,000 square meters. Its completion stands as a powerful symbol of national ambition and a direct attempt to revitalize the country’s heavily troubled tourism industry and struggling national economy.

The new space dramatically contrasts with the cramped and often disorganized displays found in the century-old Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo. Visitors to the GEM will encounter more than 50,000 artifacts showcasing what life was truly like in ancient Egypt, presented through cutting-edge techniques. The new facility incorporates modern, immersive exhibits and various virtual-reality devices, completely revolutionizing the way Egyptian history is experienced by tourists.

This modern approach to curation aims to make the vast collection more accessible and engaging for millions of expected annual visitors. In comparison to other global cultural institutions, the museum anticipates attracting five million visitors each year, placing it alongside major landmarks like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.

The twelve main galleries, which opened last year, already exhibit antiquities spanning from prehistoric times right up to the Roman era, thoughtfully organized both by historical period and specific themes.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi hosted a spectacular ceremony, officially opening the GEM and underscoring its immense national importance. The inauguration ceremony featured a breathtaking display, including vibrant fireworks and an elaborate drone light show illuminating the desert sky.

The light display depicted ancient Egyptian gods and pyramids, connecting the modern structure with the timeless history it preserves. A multitude of international dignitaries attended the event. Spain’s King Felipe, Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, all took part in the landmark occasion.

President al Sisi utilized his remarks to frame the museum as a vital global resource. He strongly urged attendees to “make this museum a platform for dialogue, a destination for knowledge, a forum for humanity, and a beacon for all who love life and believe in the value of humankind.” Construction originally began back in 2005 under then-

President Hosni Mubarak, intended to replace the old museum, which had become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Egyptian antiquities. Political turmoil, especially the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that removed Mubarak, repeatedly interrupted and delayed the project.

A planned grand opening scheduled for the summer was even postponed after a regional conflict between Israel and Iran erupted in June. The successful Grand Egyptian Museum Inauguration is now hailed by al Sisi’s office as an exceptional event in the history of human culture and civilization.

The GEM stands proudly as one of several megaprojects championed by the leader since he took office in 2014, reflecting the country’s massive infrastructure investments aimed at reviving an economy weakened by decades of stagnation and instability.

Perhaps the greatest cultural draw of the new facility is the promise of displaying the entire collection of treasures recovered from the tomb of the legendary King Tutankhamun. For the first time since British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb in Luxor in 1922, the full 5,000-piece collection will finally be exhibited together. The old Egyptian Museum in Cairo simply lacked the necessary space to display the entire set, forcing parts of the collection to be housed in museums abroad or kept in storage for decades. The GEM changes this limitation entirely.

Two halls, specifically dedicated to the boy pharaoh who ruled from 1361–1352 BC, opened during the grand inauguration. These halls will showcase artifacts including Tutankhamun’s three funeral beds and six ceremonial chariots.

They will also display his golden throne, the magnificent gold-covered sarcophagus, and the universally recognized burial mask, meticulously crafted from gold, quartzite, lapis lazuli, and coloured glass. The complete collection offers historians and the public a richer, more detailed insight into the life and ritual surrounding the young king, fundamentally improving academic access.

The GEM, opening to the public on Tuesday, represents a commitment to cultural preservation and a calculated bid for international attention, leveraging one of archaeology’s most famous discoveries to drive economic growth. The importance of King Tutankhamun’s discovery can be explored further in this historical context provided by the British Museum. The successful Grand Egyptian Museum Inauguration guarantees this complete collection will remain a permanent fixture in its home country, benefiting millions of future visitors.
