Why The Sultan’s Anti Gay Sharia Law Is Hypocritical

By Lucy Caulkett-

The application of Shariah law by the Sultan of Brunei has been condemned as hypocritical by a man known for his lavish excesses and sexual exploits in the 80’s and 90’s.

Both Sultan and his brother Prince Jefri Bolkiah are alleged to have led a lifestyle of lavish parties,  multi-million-dollar spending sprees, and indulging in sexual exploits at these parties in the 80’s and 90’s, leading a life contrary to the teachings of Islam which he  now professes as a standard he plans to establish in the oil rich province he unilaterally controls.  The Sultan is stinking rich, one of the wealthiest men in the world, boasting ownership of  luxury hotels in London, Paris and New York.

American author, Jillian Lauren,  claims to have been one his 40 hired mistresses  in the 80’s s an aspiring teenage actress in Newyork.  She published an autobiography called “Some Girls: My Life in a Harem” detailing her experiences in the Sultan ‘Harem’ with where says she spent 18 month as Prince Jefri’s “second favourite” mistress for a year.

His dictatorship laws that puts to death those guilty of gay or adulterous relations contradicts  lifestyle of immorality he and his brother once led themselves. according to critics.  His brother  Jefri once owned a giant luxury yacht he named “Tits” and two smaller vessels named Nipple 1 and Nipple 2. She has gone on record as claiming to have slept with Prince Jefri hundreds of times, and says she also slept with the Sultan himself.

“I am a witness to the fact that the sultan was drinking, was committing adultery, was not exactly living on the straight and narrow,” Lauren told CNN in May 2014. In the face of a past characterised by sexual immorality and extreme worldliness, it is an insult to the world and his faith that he would establish a law to stone individuals to death for committing a lifestyle that he now wants to have people killed for.

Adultery is a serious offence in every religion, agreed by humans of all faiths and ideologies to be improper. It violates the trust of the cheat’s married partner, and puts them in no position to criticise, let alone punish gays to death for a consensual relationship they may be involved in. International condemnation against the Sultan’s despicable law has been growing since the announcement of his  controversial law.

A viral campaign to boycott nine hotels owned by the Sultan was stoked by celebrities and reached a peak on Thursday when eight hotels deleted their Twitter profiles.

The messages calling a boycott was shared tens of thousands of times on social media, celebrities playing their role on spreading the call for the boycott. On Wednesday, Aberdeen University in Scotland said it’s considering rescinding the honorary degree it gave to the Sultan in 1995, as did Kings College London, who gave him an honorary doctorate in 2011.

Travel agencies and airlines have also ended partnerships with the state-owned Royal Brunei Airlines. TripAdvisor TRIP, -1.30% has banned reviews of the hotels in the wake of the backlash.

Jewish Care will no longer be hosting events at The Dorchester Hotel for the foreseeable future, as calls to boycott the venue grow over Brunei’s anti-LGBT law. The Jewish charity said it would be boycotting the venue and any other hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei for future events.

JEWISH CARE JOIN BOYCOTT

Jewish Care’s director of fundraising and community engagement Adam Overlander-Kaye said: “Last month Jewish Care hosted their annual Young Jewish Care’s Patron’s dinner at the Dorchester.

“This will be the last event we host at this hotel, or any other hotel owned by the Sultan of Brunei, for the foreseeable future”.

Magen David Adom UK said it would actively seek alternative venues to The Dorchester for their annual dinner in November due to concerns over human rights in Brunei. The new law also introduces public flogging as a punishment for abortion, and amputation for theft. It also criminalises exposing Muslim children to the beliefs and practices of any religion other than Islam.”
