Police have launched an urgent appeal to identify a man and woman captured on CCTV following a violent assault in Wakefield city centre that left a man in his 40s with life-threatening head injuries.
Detectives from West Yorkshire Police released the image as investigations continue into the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 2 August, in a ginnel off Westgate, close to The Rooftop Bar. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 3.20am after reports that a man had been seriously assaulted. The victim suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Investigators believe two people—a man and a woman—may have vital information about the incident and have appealed to the public to help identify them. The release of the CCTV image marks a significant step in the investigation, with officers hoping someone will recognise the pair and come forward with information that could assist the inquiry.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said detectives are keen to trace the individuals pictured and urged anyone who knows their identities to contact the force immediately.

The latest attack adds to ongoing concerns about serious violence in Wakefield and across West Yorkshire, particularly in town and city centres during the late-night economy.
According to the latest figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), West Yorkshire Police records thousands of violence against the person offences each year, with assaults causing injury accounting for a significant proportion of reported crime. Wakefield has consistently recorded hundreds of violent offences every month, with many incidents occurring in public places during weekends and overnight periods.
Crime data also show that violence and sexual offences remain among the most frequently recorded categories of crime across the Wakefield district. While many incidents involve minor injuries, cases resulting in serious head trauma or life-threatening injuries are far less common and are typically treated as major investigations.
Head injuries sustained during assaults are regarded by medical professionals as particularly dangerous because they can result in permanent disability, brain damage or death. Victims often require emergency surgery and lengthy hospital treatment, with recovery extending over many months where survival is possible.
Westgate has long been one of Wakefield’s busiest nightlife destinations, attracting thousands of visitors every weekend to its bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Police routinely increase patrols in the area during peak evening hours to deter violence and reassure the public. Despite these efforts, alcohol-related disorder and spontaneous assaults continue to present challenges for officers policing the city centre after midnight.
Nationally, Home Office statistics indicate that violence in and around licensed premises remains a recurring feature of weekend policing. Many serious assaults occur between midnight and 4am, coinciding with closing times for bars and clubs, when large crowds disperse into city streets.
West Yorkshire Police has previously worked alongside Wakefield Council, local businesses and licensed premises to improve safety through enhanced CCTV coverage, high-visibility patrols and initiatives aimed at reducing alcohol-fuelled violence.
Detectives say members of the public often play a decisive role in identifying suspects captured on CCTV, particularly where images are widely shared through social media and local news outlets.
Even seemingly insignificant details—such as recognising clothing, tattoos, hairstyles or knowing where the individuals were before or after the incident—can provide investigators with valuable leads.
Police are urging anyone who was in the Westgate area during the early hours of Sunday morning to review any mobile phone footage, photographs or dashcam recordings that may assist the investigation. As the victim continues to receive treatment in hospital, officers remain determined to establish exactly what happened and bring those responsible before the courts.
