Talkshow host Jerry Springer, a former politician turned celebrity television personality has died. at the age of 79 of pancreatic cancer.
Springer’s family said he died “peacefully” on Thursday at home in Chicago.
In a statement, the family said: “Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word.
“He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humor will live on.”
The American television personality, actor, and former politician was best known for hosting “The Jerry Springer Show,” – a controversial talk show that aired from 1991 to 2018- and which was a hit with both American and foreign audiences.
Born in London, England, Springer grew up in a Jewish family and moved to the United States when he was five years old. He attended Northwestern University, where he earned a degree in political science, and went on to attend law school at the University of Cincinnati.
After law school, Springer began his career in politics, serving on the Cincinnati City Council from 1971 to 1974. He then became the city’s mayor in 1977, serving for one year before a sex scandal forced his resignation. Springer later joked that he was the only mayor in American history to be forced out of office because of a call girl.
Springer turned to the screens as a television news anchor in Cincinnati. In 1991, he was given the opportunity to host what would become the most popular show in the country. The show’s format was simple: guests would come on and share their personal problems, often resulting in heated arguments and physical confrontations. The show quickly gained a large following and became known for its controversial topics and outrageous guests.
Over the years, “The Jerry Springer Show” tackled a wide range of topics, from paternity tests to infidelity to bizarre fetishes. In 1998, it was revealed that he had paid a prostitute with a personal check, leading to widespread ridicule and criticism. Local paper, The Cincinnati Enquirer, broke a story on April 29 that year, saying a city “politico” was involved in a two-state probe into prostitution.
He also faced criticism for his 2004 mayoral campaign in Cincinnati, which some saw as a publicity stunt. Springer first entered the political fray when he considered running in the Ohio Senate race in 2003.
