Tory MP Stirs Controversy After Instructing Staff To Cease Dealing With Asylum Cases

By Ben Kerrigan-

A Conservative MP has stirred controversy after instructing his staff to cease dealing with asylum cases, citing the need to prioritize his “limited resources” for the constituents of Dudley North.

Marco Longhi(pictured) faced backlash in the House of Commons as he announced his decision, with shouts of “resign” and “shameful” echoing through the chamber during business questions.

Longhi stated, “I have stopped the large number of so-called asylum seekers from attending my surgeries, and I have instructed my office to not deal with asylum cases for two reasons.

As MPs, we have zero authority, zero mandate, or influence over Home Office decisions. We have very limited resources, and I, for one, want to dedicate my resources to putting Dudley people first.”

The move has sparked debate over the responsibilities of MPs and their obligation to all constituents, regardless of background or immigration status.

Longhi’s stance reflects concerns about the strain asylum seekers may place on local resources and services, echoing sentiments expressed by constituents.

In response to Longhi’s remarks, Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt acknowledged the need to allocate resources efficiently and control access to the UK.

She emphasized the government’s commitment to border control and efforts to streamline Home Office processes to address backlogs and expedite case reviews.

While Longhi’s decision may be seen as prioritizing the needs of his constituents, it raises questions about the role of MPs in representing all members of their community.

While there is no legal requirement for MPs to handle specific cases, they are generally expected to advocate for the interests and concerns of all constituents.

Critics argue that Longhi’s refusal to engage with asylum cases could exacerbate vulnerability and marginalization among some of the most disadvantaged members of society.

However, supporters may view his actions as a principled stand to address local priorities and ensure efficient use of limited resources.
