British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer has said that very adult in Britain will require a digital ID under a fresh initiative to combat illegal immigration. Underlying the plan is the goal of making it near impossible for illegaL immigrants to work in the UK
The prime minister is expected to announce his backing in principle for the scheme in a speech as early as Friday, but the ambitious scheme will be subject to a consultation which will examine the practicalities of the idea.
The previous Labour government had attempted to introduce ID cards was prevented by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition.
Sir Keir said in an interview this month that he thought the debate had “moved on” since then.
“We all carry a lot more digital ID now than we did 20 years ago, and I think that psychologically, it plays a different part,” he added.
The “Brit card” would verify a citizen’s right to live and work in the UK, and is designed to demonstrate his seriousness to tackle illegal immigration and square up to real threat of defeat in the next elections by rising political force, Nigel Farage.
Anyone starting a new job would be required to show the card, which would then be checked against a central database of those entitled to work here.
At the moment, workers have to show at least one form of physical ID in the form of documents – but there are concerns within government that these can be faked.
The plan represents a shift in the government’s position, as last year ministers ruled out the idea following an intervention from Sir Tony Blair just days after Labour won the general election.
