Police Hunt Two Men Over Nazi Salute At Oxford Union Bannon Event

By Ashley Young-

Police are hunting two men who made a ‘Nazi salute’ at the Steve Bannon talk at the Oxford Union last week that sparked huge protests.

Two men were filmed  making what appeared to be a Nazi salute during a protest against Steve Bannon’s appearance at the Oxford Union

Cops  say the two men “appeared to mimic a Nazi-style salute”, which “appeared to goad the group of protesters present in St Michael’s Street”.

The force have released two images of the men, who appeared to joke while making a gesture, before seeming to mock goose step, ‘mime’ a Hitler moustache and film their actions. They say it is a religious aggravated offence.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant George Atkinson, of Oxford Investigation Hub, said: “We are investigating this religiously aggravated public order offence following videos which have been circulated on social media since the incident.

“The incident appears to have caused alarm and distress to those who were present and we are investigating the circumstances.

“As part of the investigation I would like to speak to the two men shown in the images.”

The actions have caused outrage in the community, with one witness, Dana Naomy Mills, explaining during the weekend: “The thing that struck me was that though masses of police appeared to protect Bannon entering, no one was around when this happened, and those thugs kept taunting the protesters throughout, with no police intervention.

“I am the granddaughter of a German Jewish woman who escaped Germany in the 1930s, and I am still horrified and mortified by what has happened. I am grateful for solidarity the Oxford community has shown, but really this needs to be tackled head on, and questions should be asked about how the Union and police enabled the events of Friday to unfold the way they did, and what are they doing to follow up.”
