Shortly after the killing, foreign-based gangsters Prabh Dasuwal and Donny Bal claimed responsibility for the murder on social media, alleging the victim ignored previous threats. Police are investigating the authenticity of this claim and whether personal or local rivalries were masked by the gang name.

The investigation continues to explore all angles, including the fact that Jarmal Singh had survived three prior murder attempts and had filed a police complaint regarding extortion calls in the past. On Sunday afternoon, between 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm, Jarmal Singh, the 50-year-old sarpanch of Valtoha village, was attending a relative’s wedding at the Marigold Marriage Palace near Amritsar’s Vllage.  Chilling CCTV footage shows two unmasked assailants in hoodies and jeans walking calmly through the crowd of guests.

Moments after local AAP MLA Sarwan Singh Dhun departed from the table, the attackers approached Singh from behind. One gunman pulled a pistol and fired a point-blank shot into Singh’s head, followed by a second shot, killing him instantly in front of horrified wedding guests.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann personally intervened, directing Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav to expedite the probe and ensure “zero tolerance” for such brazen violence.
Scene Analysis and Forensic Evidence: Police cordoned off the Marigold Marriage Palace, securing ballistic evidence and recording statements from dozens of eyewitnesses who saw the unmasked shooters. It is part of a notable spike in brazen, daylight killings in India, particularly in throughout late 2025 and early 2026.

In the first week of 2026 alone, Punjab witnessed nine murders, including four described as “brazen shootings”.
On December 15, 2025, kabaddi player-cum-promoter Rana Balachauria was shot dead by three assailants during a tournament in Mohali.
Roughly two months prior to Jarmal Singh’s murder, a similar double homicide occurred at a wedding venue in Ludhiana.

On December 1, 2025, associates of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang gunned down Inderpreet Singh (alias Parry) in a crowded timber market.
Seven weeks earlier on October 10, 2025, two men were shot dead in a crowded Batala market by bike-borne assailants.

Wider Trends Across India

Outside of Punjab, other high-profile, daylight attacks have been reported in early 2026.
In Patna, Bihar: Former bank robber Aman Shukla was fatally shot by gunmen on a motorcycle in front of his wife and son on January 6, 2026.
A car driver for a state minister’s family was brutally stabbed multiple times in a busy central locality on January 6, 2026.
Maharashtra: A 20-year-old man was beaten, shot, and killed in a suspected caste-based “honour killing” in December 2025

Criminal gangs are increasingly operating without masks, which is interpreted as a sign of their lack of fear of the law.  Many of these targeted killings are believed to be orchestrated by gangsters based abroad (e.g., in Portugal or Canada), who coordinate local youth to carry out hits for extortion or rivalry.
