Former presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton faced embarrassing questions during the House Panel investigating Epstein about her husband receiving massages from young girls .
Clinton who has always insisted on her innocence told a congressional panel she “had no idea” about Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, as she called for lawmakers to question President Donald Trump under oath about his past association with the late sex offender.
Her former presidential husband, Bill Clinton, will give evidence to the oversight panel on Friday. The couple had initially resisted the panel’s subpoena, branding it a political witch hunt , only recently deciding to come out and testify.
Although her husband, Bill Clinton has told the US House Panel that he cut off ties with Epstein two decades ago, and has expressed regret that he was ever associated with the financier, who died in 2019, the grilling continues, and so does the push for exoneration from the Clintons..
“We have nothing to hide,” Hilaty said. “We have called for the full release of these files repeatedly. We think sunlight is the best disinfectant.”
Clinton maintained that she never met Epstein, but did meet his convicted associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, “on a few occasions”. Maxwell attended the wedding of the couple’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton, in 2010 in New York.
The couple’s announcement in recent weeks that they would provide testimony marked a sharp U turn of their previously defiant position, and came as a potential contempt vote loomed in the House.
Hillary Clinton’s six hour grilling by law makers in The House Oversight Committee
They described the legal summonses as “nothing more than a ploy to attempt to embarrass political rivals, as President Trump has directed”.
They insisted that they had already submitted sworn statements that covered the “limited information” they had on Epstein.
Nonetheless, they would appear, said a spokesperson for Bill Clinton, and “they look forward to setting a precedent that applies to everyone”.
Comer said the effort to secure a deposition from both of the Clintons was a bipartisan move to show that “no-one is above the law”.
The meeting was temporally halted after a photo of Hilary in the room was sent to a Conservative influencer and posted online.
Bill Clinton has been depicted in text and photos that have recently been released in stages by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in its disclosure of material arising from federal investigations into Epstein’s crimes.
Reporters have been at pains to point out that appearing in documents does not amount to evidence of wrong doing, but merely expresses the diverse level of high profile names who had connections , directly or indirectly with the late billionaire financier.
The Clintons’ hearings will take place in Chappaqua, New York, and are taking place in public at the behest of Hilary Clinton, though the Clintons fought for their own testimony to be public so that selective portions of their evidence could not be leaked to the media.
. The highly anticipated appearance by Bill Clinton on Friday will represent the first time a former US president has testified to a congressional panel since Gerald Ford did so in 1983. Great public interest will surround the experience.
