The Independent Group (TIG) of MPs have put in an application to become a political party to take part in European elections in May .

The group will be led by Heidi Allen,(pictured) who is their interim leader, and will go by the name of as Change UK.Former Labour Mp, Chuka Umunna, will act as the group’s spokesman.politician and MP. Allen was Previously a Conservative member , but she joined the group after renouncing her membership of the  party on 20 February 2019 over what she described as the  “hard-line anti-EU awkward squad” take over the party in a joint letter

The announcement comes as MPs have been told they face their last opportunity to do all in their power to extend the Brexit process  to 22 May and bring certainty to people and businesses. Britan was initially due to leave the EU today, March 29. MPs will only be voting on the withdrawal agreement and not the political declaration. Previously, both of these were voted on and rejected.

Under the withdrawal agreement, the UK would enter into a 21-month transition period with the EU after Brexit. During this time, the UK would continue to follow EU rules and remain in the single market and customs union to allow frictionless trade to continue. The UK would also lose membership of EU institutions.

The attorney general has said that any further extension past 12 April would be “subject to the veto” of 27 EU leaders.
